Milkweed-all same? (pics)

Ok, I originally thought that I only had common milkweed. While walking out today, I notice I now have white also. then I also started noticing other differences between plants. So can you tell me if these are all the same, or different varieties.

This one's blooms are white to yellow, and has larger rounder leaves, and the center vein is whitish.

This one looks alot like #3, but the blooms are smaller, it's taller, and the leaves are narrower and have a white vein.

This one was what I thought was common milkweed, it was the first to bloom. But it has slightly narrower leaves than #1, that all have a red vein in the center. And the blooms are larger than #2.

This is also the same plant as #3, It just was a pic I took a little over a week ago. It shows the color of the blooms better.

I think you have a couple of species there.
Since nobody has replied I have a suggestion :
Look at the web site below, Miissourplants.com, to view some of the species that may fit your photos.

I looked at the USDA database of Asclepias native to Michigan . There are quite a few - about a dozen. Some of those were obviously not the species you have.

Look at A. purpurascens with the dark purple in the midrib of the leaf.

A. speciosa
A. syriaca
A. sullivantii

I was wondering about A. pupurascens and A. sullivantii too. Here in Mi, A.p is a special concern plant and A. s is state protected.

A. syriaca seems to have flowers up and down the stalks in all the pics I saw, none of mine do that, they are all flowering at the top only.

A. speciosa flowers are quite different than what I have too.

I'm wondering if I have a bunch of crosses....

A suggestion....look at a few garden catalogues/books at your local home improvement stores....there are some specialty issues coming out now about BF gardening.... The trick, especially if space is tight, is to think and work with nature/seasons and dimensions. Trellises are a wonderful way of adding dimension to a garden. Trees/shrubs also add colour, texture, and some shade if needed for some of your part-sun plants. Try not to go monochromatic, with 1 BF species...you're setting yourself up. Diversity your garden into thirds.... 1/3 host plants of various (start with MW-monarchs, fennell/parsely/rue BST's (rue-GST), a pair of aristolocias for PV (plant 2 on 1 trellis if necessary for thicker growth habit)...and a couple more for your area... then 1/3 nectar plants (some function as nectar and larval host)...your nectar plants need to be performing 3 seasons, spring, summer, fall....a classic is the BF bush, and doubles as a shade producer....and you can cut it down every year for longevity.... Also, a groundcover can hold down soil temperature in hot climates, reduce weed pulling, and there are a few that are host plants as well. One thing I have learned is many species like to scoot off their host plant for a time, especially when they molt. Perhaps for safety. This gives a garden that is beautiful to the beholder both human and BF The 1/3 people tend to overlook are shrubs/trees--many of which by the way make excellent host plants, tulip poplar for EST, and willows of any veriety should work for Viceroys & RSP's....the list goes on and on, but if you follow these rules, your garden will have colour, diversity, beauty, dimension, and always some surprises! I know it is hard to find 'real organic' anything. In response to butterflymomok, yes these came from eggs laid by the random visitors.. I'm fairly new to butterfly gardening. Planted different varieties hoping some for larval feed and some for nectar and I think monarch and the sulphurs visit the garden. I will check with the gentleman who introduced me to this new addiction( besides orchids and roses, lol). Thank you all for your kind generous responses. I want to bump this up again so those who are interested in preserving this plant can add this year's growing information. I had a baby who bloomed this spring but no seed pods. The same with the wild A variegata I dug up three seasons ago. This year it put up four strong stalks and lots of flower heads but again, not one seed pod. I watched the flower heads closely and even though some flying insects crawled all over the flowers, there was no pollination. This particuliar milkweed appears to bloom the earliest of all the milkweeds I have. Maybe there aren't enough insects around this early to aid in the pollination. We had terrible high temps over a long period this summer and it was all I could do to keep the plants alive. Did anyone else have any luck getting seed pods of this plant? I also purchased three small A variegata plants from Pine Ridge Gardens this year (all MaryAnn would sell me as I suspect she was trying to make them available to more of her clients). I'm going to overwinter them in 1 gal nursery pots. I haven't decided if I'm going to try growing them in big planters on my deck next year (mostly high dappled shade) or plant them inground. Maybe I should try putting one in ground this fall and keeping two in the nursery pots over winter. Darylltx, If you have some time I found my bookmark (in my mess of saved bookmarks) this morning to an excellent write up titled Saga Jolokia by Harald Zoschke over at the Fiery Foods website. It's a bit dated but still a valid read IMHO. If you do get through it, for what it's worth, I'm not entirely sure I agree with the Frontal Agritech persons statement that "Naga jolokia, Nagahari, Bhut jolokia, Bih jolokia or Borbih jolokia are the same chilli but named differently at different places". For example I, and others, have observed at least one subtle but consistent difference between the Bhut and Bih Jolokia where the Bih tends to grow straighter. Another example is the Naga Moresh and Dorset Naga. Both are thought to be from the same Bangladeshi branch but there is a distinct difference between the two in that the Dorset puts out smaller pods. My best guess here would be that all of these are Asclepias syriaca... although it wouldn't surprise me if one is Asclepias purpurascens. Asclepias speciosa & Asclepias sullivantii can be ruled out by either flower shape or petiole length, respectively.

The two things that would make certain ID possible would be knowing if the leaves are hairy underneath, and having close views of the individual flowers.

They are all slightly fuzzy underneath. The white one is definantly fuzzier though. It would take me a while to get a close up of individual flowers, my slr isn't digital, so I'd have to get the film developed. I'll try to get the petiole lengths.

To be honest, the differences between the 3 aren't much; the slight diff shape of the leaves, the color of the viens, and the color of the blooms, the actual flowers look pretty much the same. Unless there's something I'm not noticing.

Ok, here's what I did, I took one flower (ok 2 from 2) and scanned them on the scanner, once face down, once flat on the side. The white (#1) and purple (#3) flowers are pretty much the same shape. #2 has smaller flowers, with a white center, where as #3 has a purple/mauve center.
Here are the pics: (the colors are true)

The petiole lengths, w/ my measurement skills, are about #1 7/16 inch #2 3/16 inch #3 3/8 inch...hmm...maybe I should've gotten out the ruler instead of the tape measurer and done it in cm...

On another note, I aslo have some milkweed that have pointed wide leaves w/ the red vien, they haven't bloomed yet though.

I think he meant the leaf petiole, is that what you measured?

Yeah I did measure the leaf petiole. I'm fairly new to flowers and gardening in general, so bare with me here. I measured the "stem" of the leaves. From the stalk to the actual leaf. Like I said, maybe I should go out there w/ an actual ruler, I used my husbands construction tape measurer, which was big and bulky to get in there. Oh, I forgot i had this pic. It was taken the same time as the last pic of #3, but w/ the SLR so the buds are clearer.
