I tried it and it IS round and round we go. I finally got to the listing for the journal's url, which connected to the same page as what I got when clicking on making a journal entry which insists that I connect to the help page which tells me that I can comment on hortiplex's plants. At no point, no matter what I clicked, did it lead to a page for making journal entries. Ptui.

Morning all, Raybo, First off, congrats on all your press out there. You've really taken a simple design and "Mona Lisa'd" it!! Actually, the BER really wasn't that bad...maybe twenty tomatoes out of 400 or so. Will see if I can find the C-Tex for next year. And no, no fall garden. Tried it last year with dismal results. Johnny, You know...after further review I guess I really shouldn't be too disappointed with my results. The production of some varities wasn't what I hoped for but it was still fun trying new ones. I sure learn a lot on this site and it's fun to compare notes with others. I used hydrated lime which I picked up at a farm CO-OP. Next year I'll use Dolomitic lime which tends not to affect PH as much. As I told Raybo above, in hindsite, I really didn't have much of a BER problem after all. I think out of a total of 400 tomatoes or so, I only had to cull about 20 which had BER. Most of these were the Parks Whopper CR, same plants I had trouble with last year. However, I'll continue to grow them next year as they produce a perfectly shaped, tasty and large (10-12 oz) tomato. Their production is really good also...15-20 fruit per plant. It it were me, I'd continue to use the lime. The Black Cherry were good but others liked them better than I did. I was really disappointed with Opalka. Had heard so many great things about it but for me, production was very poor. The Kellogg's Breakfast was really a disappointment. Very bland, almost tasteless. Of course, one year's experience doesn't really mean much as the weather was really not normal this year down here. So...I don't mean to belittle any of these varieties, maybe they just don't do all that well where I live. Or...maybe I don't know what the hell I'm doing!!!! Cheers! It's a personal preference. Low profile is 5" and regular profile is 9". The issue is that most of today's mattresses are so thick that the overall bed height can be too high for some to comfortably get on/off the bed. Furthermore, if it's too high it can become an issue with some types of bedding where it does not come down far enough on the sides to reach the slats. What you need to do is figure out the total height of your bed after the mattress and boxspring is on. To do that, you need to add up the thickness of the mattress + boxpsring + height to bottom slats. I recently bought two mattresses and for both I opted for the low profile which puts the bed at a perfect height such as we had before with our older mattress and box spring.

I did a pretty good job of journaling in the 1980s and 1990s, but not so much since then. I think I kept pretty good records for the first 2 or 3 years we lived here in OK, but just got too busy after that. I don't even try to keep track of things on paper or computer or with a camera. I simply make a plan in my head (my plan is simple: grow everything and grow too much of it all), follow my plan, and reap the harvest. I always do start out the canning season with a canning log, keeping track of each batch canned by batch number, type of product canned, date and the number of jars in the batch. That works for a while, but inevitably I get too busy canning and ditch the canning journal at some point....usually in June. I've never bothered keeping records of what I dehydrate, ferment or freeze. I measure the garden year as a success or a lack of success by how much produce we've eaten fresh, by how much I've canned, by how many freezers we've filled up, how many potatoes, onions, winter squash, etc. sit in the cool, dark back corners of the under-the-stairs pantry, etc. I don't mean that I have a count of those items, but rather that I simply know if we have a little, a middling amount or a lot. Most years are massive successes. Last year with its nearly 80" of rain was not so great, and 2011 with the exceptional drought and heat wasn't either, but in every other year, we've raised enough produce and preserved enough of it so that we rarely buy produce at the grocery store, other than things we cannot grow here---like lettuce in July-August, for example. This year? I canned about 500 jars of stuff, filled up two freezers and have a full pantry, so it ranks as a success whether I kept any written records of the year or not. It mostly comes down to time. Any time spent writing things down or logging them on a computer, taking photos, etc. is time taken away from the garden. I'd rather spend time in the garden or in the kitchen preparing the produce for meals or preserving it, so everything else like journaling falls by the wayside. I used to plan my garden out on paper too....drawing little graphs of every raised bed and meticulously planning out the spacing prior to planting. Ha! That fell by the wayside by the mid-2000s. The weather varies so much here from year to year that it is hard to find consistency in when to plant or how much to plant because you have to be able to go with the flow and adapt to whatever weather you have, so I didn't find journaling all that helpful when I did it because one year we might have the last freeze in early February and another year we might be plagued by late freezes through the first week in May, so it is hard to look at years' worth of previous journals and find any consistency to use as a guide. It took me a few years of living here and gardening here in OK to learn that. No two years are ever the same. It keeps life interesting, even unjournaled.
