Going back to the urine topic, It is possible to transmit some diseases through urine, but the transmission routes simply don't exist for trees or above ground crops (so long as you don't accidentally drink it on the way to watering!). For above ground crops, you can flush them by watering without urine for a week before harvest to be sure, as no viral/bacterial disease can survive outside it's host that long. Also water at the base without splashing the fruit/veg. If you refrigerate, wash, peel and cook root/ground sitting veg you'll remove any transmission routes too. I don't know of any worm infection common to the UK with oocysts transmitted in urine. Your highest risk is from toxo, but if you're growing veg in your back garden the neighbours cat has probably given it to you already! Schisto is not a threat in the UK, as we don't have the snails needed to support their extremely complicated and interesting (to me anyway!) lifecycle. Your main concern will still be with an additional source of Phosphorus, when time comes to move your crop from vegetative growth to flowering. Seriously, this is all overkill for domestic gardening. If you're doing this commercially you should consult your National Government's regs, which are likely based on those of the WHO (World Health Org). The safety issue of bone meal has a political angle. As a consequence of BSE, the Canada / US border has been closed to meat products, including bone meal. So US prices may be going done (glut to local markets) and Canadian prices are higher. A major meat processor here in Ontario has begun to produce bone and blood meal fertilizers as a result of the new demand. To contribute to your question of the safety of bone meal. There is really very little research on the subject. During the mad cow crisis in the UK, at least one professional gardener contracted BSE as a result of breathing in powdered raw, powdered bone meal from local slaughterhouses. BSE was a widespread problem in England at that time-- far more animals were affected there than have ever been affected here-- although we don't know for sure because the inspection regime here is extremely pro-business and anti-public safety. The bone meal that is sold commercially in North America is highly processed (which is partly why is it not permitted by most organic certifying organizations). The bones are boiled, steamed, dried, crushed and pelletized. It is not known whether the steaming temperatures kill any prions that may have entered the system. Remember that that an infected prion would have to be ingested to do you harm. You would need to either swallow it, or breathe it in. I started to write about the conditions of the animals in factory farms, but I won't open that can of fish. Let's just say that these are sick, sad, drugged creatures. On the other hand, bone meal re-uses organic material that would otherwise go to the landfill. If you can find a local source of ground bones from an organic livestock producer-- great. But most of these producers just compost their carcasses. The equipment to process them into useable bone and blood meal is too expensive, and the market is (still) too small. In the end, it is a personal decision, based on health, environmental, and political reasons.

Usually people are against adding bone meal and all that stuff, in these forums, I thought, because they always seem to take the approach of "do it as cheap as possible and as simply as possible" which is good. I thought there would be easier, cheaper ways of adding bone meal rather than going out to the store and buying bags of it...No? Adding compost is great and all but I'm not sure how to amend to provide enough phosphorus for things like my flowers.... I don't mind tilling once and starting off with amendments because that is very helpful..don't get me wrong. But after that first year, I run into the problem of "ok, how can I add things (specifically in this case phosphorus) without tilling into the soil? Like I said, adding compost..ok..easy...and good.. but I was hoping for a nice and easy and cheap way of "laying down" phosphorus as I do compost. I guess I should just lay down bone meal the same way as I do with compost and not worry about tilling it in? And is there any other alternative to bone meal & guano? Sorry for all the questions

Does your soil actually need these things? Applying nutrients that are not needed, no matter when, can cause more problems that they would solve as well as being a waste of your money, time, and energy.
