Companion Plants for Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa)

I have a very large/aggressive stand of wild bergamot in my butterfly garden.....I am tired of pulling baby bergamots and other weeds....I am going to covert this butterfly garden into a meadow/rain garden....any suggestions for native plants that make good companions with wild bergamot and can compete well with them?

In my area there is a field (power line really) that has M. fistulosa and also:

- wild quinine
- 7 different species of goldenrod (some clumping)
- butterfly weed
- black-eyed Susan
- silphiums
- helianthus
- phlox paniculata (and some spring blooming phlox species)
- purple asters
- angelica
- featherbells

And other things, of course, but these are prolific. They make for a nice combination and sequence of blooms from spring to fall. Of course there is a ton of wild blackberry too to fill in all the spaces....

Vera, I have a lot of red Monarda 'Gardenview Scarlet'. I need to thin it out because it is crowding out my other plants. I can pull out a bunch and mail them to you for postage. It is very easy. Email me if interested. I love this Monarda. Smells great in the breeze.

Jacob Cline is a cultivar of Monarda didyma, a "cousin" of this plant, if you will. I have a piece of it as well, but I have not been very kind to it and it is struggling for me also. I have one lone bloom about to open. I need to top dress it with some compost and see if I can coax it to grow better. That one is a gorgeous scarlet color.

Okay, then here's a trick question . . . How do I pronounce, "Agastache??" I think I'm okay with monarda. Anise hyssop scares me only a little . . . I'd prefer to use the term mint for everything, EVERYTHING. Could that be possible or is it just aiding and abetting? Steve

Best Bee Balm (Monarda, Bergamot) for Tea?

I've got lots of different kinds of bee balm and they all smell good. Should I just try different ones to see which one makes the best tea? They are just wonderful for keeping the deer out of the roses and blueberries. So far, we have red, white, light pink, medium pink, burgandy and a pretty pink/purple. One of the red ones got 5' tall, but the rest stay at about 2' to 3' tall :)
