leaf mold as mulch, how deep?
Comments (14)ikea, you have a natural organic goldmine,it is onsite, and totally free, if it was me ....I would make 6" deep paths and toss that soil on the beds and fill the paths with leafs... I would then top the beds with lots of leafs and some blood meal and bone meal and maybe some lime water it down and start planting in the spring, you won't have any weeds and even if there were a few,you could easily deal with them....See MoreMold growing on top of mulch?
Comments (3)Generally mold on mulch isn't a problem. Do you have a pic? If you have a lot of slugs and the ground is always wet, I would cut back on the watering. In addition to the mold and slugs, overwatering is harmful to the plants....See MoreMulch & too much rain = mold? Do I need to replace
Comments (9)It sounds like a slime mold. If that is true, it is ugly but not harmful. I have heard that cocoa mulches get it a lot, which is one to several reasons I don't use cocoa mulch. (The other reasons are that it is expensive rather than free; that it smells like food, not like a garden; and finally that it has the potential to be toxic to my dog. She'll eat anything.) As for mulch depth and turning old mulch into the soil, I used to hear that advice but haven't recently, and don't do either of those things myself. I use a deeper mulch, probably around 4 inches, at least if you count the depth of the compost plus the depth of the wood chip mulch on top of that together. And soil experts these days say that it is better for the structure of the soil when microorganisms to work the compost down into the soil instead of you digging it in. In fact, they say to dig as little as possible. A really good book to read about all of this is Teaming with Microbes: A Gardener's Guide to the Soil Food Web by Jeff Lowenfels. It is a fascinating book, and very informative. Best of all, you don't need to be a scientist to enjoy it. Comments (1)I think there was an article in the Dispatch sometime this year about this--in the gardening section. You might try searching their archive. In this weather I am not surprised at any odd findings in the garden. Especially of the mold & mildew kind. Raee...See More- 17 years ago
