Which one is that, Don? That is one Holy Hosta!

In my garden, hands down, it's Eola Sapphire. Slug bait from hell. It's such a beautiful hosta too, I'm going to have to protect it better next year. Right now it looks like baby swiss cheese.

It used to be Cascades. Couldn't keep slugs off it, so I let them have it. Used the nice terracotta pot for a better hosta this year.

Had trouble with one of my Island Charms last year. Must have missed with the Sluggo, since usually that protects it.

Don, Is that hosta of yours still alive? Yeeesh!!

None thanks to Sluggo....and the fact that they are in pots. :-)

Knocking wood....but any slug damage I have is mostly confined to leaf edge nibbeling...and it's on one golden edger the fragrant bouquet, antioch but not much and royal standard.
I really love the iron compound slug bait!! Wish I hads tock in one of the companies that make it!

Don, it looks like you're growing organic camo netting. You grow everything bigger in your garden. Do you have to walk with a stun gun in your garden after dusk?

Mine are all forresters - cutting the leaves off at soil level - or maybe they're just too lazy to climb.

NO slugs this year - on any of 200+. Fluffy pine needles (a foot long) laid down last year plus dryer lint as close as possible to the dirt around each petiole of the most susceptible - I'm sure had a lot to do with it. Even Invincible is hole-less!

I have read that dryer lint works,does any one know why?
Mine is Invincible,like greenthumb, i love that hosta.I have noticed a lot of mine this year are being eaten,even though i put down slug bait, next year i am trying the amonia for sure.

Westy, I'm with you. With all of the rain this year, I can't believe it, not one slug in over 500 hostas. What's up with that. Makes me wonder! I didn't put any thing down to stop them either. Maybe they drowned!!! Sally

Not to aggrivate,the rest of ya'll,but I don't have a problem with slugs. I occasionally find some tiny ones,but I just pluck them off,and toss them as far as I can. I never use sluggo,it just attracts them to the hosta. By the time they get back to the garden,it is fall! Lol! Phil

The last two years, I have had very little trouble with slugs. Last year I started using Milorganite on my Hosta. It has iron in it. Does anyone think that that iron could be detering them at all. Two years ago I also threw my 3 Invincibles (slug bait), but how could that affect my whole garden--unless slugs are long distance travelers! Mary

That hosta that is really chewed to pieces isn't from my garden...I stole that pic from another website. Not sure what kind it is (or was!).

I was having a pretty good year slug-wise, but after some hail damage a few weeks ago, I'm just not looking too closely at my hostas. Its too sad.

My theory on slugs is that if its a dry spring and they don't get off to a good start, the rest of the year is much improved. Does this fit others experiences?

Sorry to hear that Invincible is slug bait. I got that one last year and divided it a lot. I hoped to use it to replace other less interesting solid greens scatterred about. I was hoping that the glossy foliage would be a slug deterrent.

My Krossa Regal always has some small holes in it but I never see the culprits.

It's amazing that one doesn't pay as much attention to threads whose subjects are not much of a problem at the time. Now that it's late summer, slugs have been active longer. I think I agree with WendyB in that a drier spring produces a smaller crop of slugs as our last two springs were dry with no slug problems, and this year our spring was wet and I have a lot more slugs. My worst H for slugs right now are Stetson, Undulata, Groundmaster, zounds, rhodifolia, Cherry Berry, N Exposure, and Grand Canyon (the last two are young). I tried the ammonia with no visible results--is there a trick to it--- like more applications?

Does anyone know why the light areas taste better? It seems to be true in my garden.

This year has actually been a much better one for slug damage. We had a cold, wet, lousy spring (and some of the summer). The only difference in what I did was the way I applied the slug bate. I had just heard that the non-poison kind only lasts a few days. I tried to sprinkle it very lightly at least twice a week. I also did what Phil said and for once didn't put it around the plants. I sprinkled it away from them hoping to draw the slugs in the other directions. It, or something, seems to have worked.

Why is it that dryer lint works?

This is my first yr for a slug problem and Ive had this garden for 22 yrs. They are loving one undulata in particular, but not touching the one about 2 feet away. The difference is I dont have mulch around the one theyre not touching. After I discovered an infestation of earwigs after purchasing mulch Ive started to eliminate it altogether.

Hi, Don, always happy to help with your lists as you so kindly sent me your hosta lists in June. I've been making good use of it, as has been one of my landscaping friends!

This year I've been pretty good with using the Sluggo, so not too much slug dammage. Those hostas showing some damage anyhow, this year, are: Wolverine, Lakeside Kaleidoscope, Plantaginea, Red October, and Satin Bloomers. That last one really hurts, as SB is quickly becoming a favorite of mine.

Scooter, Fair Maiden, plantaginea. I've never noticed them before this year. I think I'm going to try pine needles and eucalyptus mulch next year. They are kinda cute, though, with their little horns.

Cherry Berry... maybe it's the name. Nocturnal critters seem to find that one especially delicious. Second helpings galore!
