This spring I bought (supposedly) Celastrus scandens vines from our local Soil and Water Conservation District. Two of the 10 plants are starting to flower, but the buds are axillary, not terminal on the branches. I know that terminal pistillate flowers and fruit are the identifying features of Celastrus scandens (vs. C. orbiculatus, the invasive exotic). Does C. scandens have axillary staminate flowers?
