Just want to share a photo of my Native Honeysuckle. This just showed up after killing off the buckthorn.

Because it is such a hardy plant (can't kill it for sure) you can prune it all you want - even down to the nub - and it will grow back. Best time though is after it flowers so that new flowers will be lower on the vine next time, which would mean pruning in the fall when it finally finishes flowering. But, you can trim it to your liking anytime of the year to keep it within your prescribed bounds. It is not like Clematis as far as new growth vs. last year's if that is what you are worried about. ALL vining honeysuckles are twiners - that is, they attach themselves to supports by twining stems, not by holdfasts or rootlets. It's my experience that when well established, they grow very vigorously and will easily produce long stems that could have the ability to reach around a telephone pole. But you will have better luck initially if you provide some sort of support system to get the vine started - chicken wire, fishing line, any sort of twine or wire that will give the twining stems a place to start to hold and climb. You might want to check with your phone company about allowing a vine to climb on their poles - here it is prohibited, as it could interfer with maintenance/service. Lonicera sempervirens is also a bit of a misnomer. Only in the very mildest of winter areas will it remain evergreen - it is NOT in my zone 8 climate! And it has no scent, either.

It worked for me. Is it lonicera sempervirens? I just planted some this year for my hummingbirds since I saw it recommended so many times.

The link did not work for me, either-I got the same message as terryr. However, I tried right-clicking the link and went to "Properties." This brought up the URL which I copied and pasted, allowing me to open the pic.

Sure looks like L. sempervirens to me. BTW, I heard a while back that you can always tell a native honeysuckle vine from the non-native by the leaves. Only the native ones have some of the leaves fused together near the flowers, like you can see quite well in this pic. Hope this is true, as I have passed on this ID tidbit to a number of people!

Hmm...I tried right clicking and bring up properties, but it didn't work as it did for dbs. I use Mozilla firefox, so I tried the copy link location and opened a new tab and pasted in the address bar. That time it opened in another picture viewing program. Looks like a Lonicera sempervirens to me also.

dbs, I don't know if all native honeysuckle vines look as you describe, but the native Lonicera prolifera looks that way also.
