Diervilla lonicera fragrant? ( Northern Bush Honeysuckle)

Diervilla lonicera or Northern Bush Honeysuckle is a plant I am very excited about. It has yellow flower that resemble a honeysuckle, but is not a true honeysuckle.

It is beautiful for certain, and it is a native.

Is Diervilla lonicera a fragrant plant though?

I grow this plant, but I have not noticed a scent. I checked in Cullina, and his material doesn't mention anything about fragrance.

That is what I thought.
I would be glad to hear if anyone had experience to the contrary.
I like the plant very well. I don't understand why it should so often be touted as a substitute for invasive. L. japonica though. What merits a honeysuckle's name other than a very fragrant plant?
L. flava, from the South, is said to be somewhat fragrant however, as is L. sempervivens 'John Clayton'.

Actually that's an interesting question. I can't remember ever hearing that they were edible, and considering how prolifically they fruit if they were good to eat I imagine they'd get mentioned. According to the a quick internet search 'Honeysuckle' fruits and leaves are mildly toxic, but the sites I saw didn't get any more specific than 'Honeysuckle' in terms of ID. There are a lot of Honeysuckles. Apparently they're also toxic to dogs. I found one mention of eating Lonicera villosa fruit in an old (1958) book on edible plants, but that's a native one and not the one you've got. We used to suck the nectar out of the tubes of the Japanese Honeysuckle flower when we were kids, apparently that is not toxic. WW

In late June/early July I planted a grouping of five on the other side of a Japanese maple - not directly underneath it - and under the shade canopy of a large, established sugar maple (about 10' from the trunk), which is the area I mentioned above. The soil is not great and on the drier side, but I do have sprinklers which hit the bed, so they did get supplemental water from the sprinklers, and I did hand-water occasionally just to be sure. I was going to go with three shrubs, but a grouping of five looked better. Most of them seem to have done fairly well this season except one. I think the problem with that one is I may not have planted it deeply enough because of the way the sprinkler lines run (and I want it in JUST the right spot goshdarnit!), and it seemed to be slowly petering out over the season, losing leaves little by little. Really, though, it's too early to tell how they will perform in that location, it's only the first season.

Well japonica is the strongest scented vine but I think the shrubby lonicera fragrantissima is a stronger scented bush. Syringa vulgaris is supposed to be the strongest scented lilac, can't say I'm a fan of the way lilacs smell though. RP1
