Tipularia discolor - Cranefly Orchid

I've been watching a small grouping of these plants since early spring. The leaves have all withered and almost disappeared. Does anyone know the approximate time between the leaves dying back and the blooms showing up in Zone 7?

I haven't seen any yet either, but should be soon. I would ask on orchid forum - those guys know this orchid well.

They begin blooming in the north about June. The southern populations are usually 1-2 months later. Check the Flora of North America link below.

That sure looks like it and it grows in wet rotted wood type soil, thats about where it is growing by the creek. THANK YOU.

Very hot and dry here. What a nice surprize today, both cranefly orchid and rattlesnake plantain in full bloom. First time they've bloomed in several years. I'm always careful not to let RP get smothered with fallen leaves in the winter. Orchids are so mysterious and that is what makes them special.

I believe your plant is Tipularia discolor - Cranefly Orchid. It is native to SE USA. Good find. Here is a link Tipularia discolor This forum is pretty slow but if you have more plants to ID the Name That Plant forum here is quite active.

This is such a cool plant and underrated. I love the purple underside to the foliage. I have seen it thriving on poor, gravely soil unfazed....its a winner.
