No wonder that my husband thinks every package that arrives is probably another hosta!

And I said I wouldn't buy any this year because I bought so many last year!

Oh well.....a few off my gotta have list anyway! Leaves room to add more! Told my husband we have 1.5 acres of lawn, someday he won't have to mow at all!

Yes Val, Lloyd does have a big one... um, compost that is. Got to keep on topic here, so yes, moderators, we are talking about compost and women do like them too. :O) I knew that response to a previous post would come back to haunt me one day Lloyd. Taking photos of the evidence was an OOPS moment. Me bad! As I said, I'll return the milk pail full of compost they produce to you in a couple of years. :O) Thanks Terrene, and for Karen, here's a couple of encore pics and one of 39 Monarchs which they helped raise this past year. This was my last 'baby', a male, released on October 8th. Paul, Nothing like a Cape Bretonner (I think you are...) lashing out at a mainlander!! LOL! Yep, I show them on my garden tours. They are part of what I do and actually the interest is quite amazing. Especially when you tell them they can do it for free. It's funny because I actually migrate towards compost piles when I visit other gardens... Folks sometimes think I'm up to no good. They probably fear me taking their compost away, and rightfully so. So you'd better keep that watch dog out when I visit, eh? :O) Idaho, My husband and I get along quite well when it comes to the compost. We have an agreement. He doesn't touch my compost and I don't touch his books - he's a worm of another kind. As long as my compost results in an increase in property value, which it has, and his books stay organized, then we are all good.

HKG, Sorry for your frustration, but sadly sometimes it's part of the learning curve. I too am in NYC (actually Brooklyn) & grow lots of Sans in my own C&S mix w/plenty of perlite. I am not a fan of gritty mix, when I tried it for my Hoyas, it didn't work well for me or my routines. I think some folks here make this unnecessarily complicated. Bernard, Sansevierias (Sans for short) ARE succulents, originating in S. Africa (I believe), but also growing in tropics (where I grew up). They also DO grow in arid, desert-like situations as well. I wish I'd seen this sooner, as I would have made plain special mix is simply not necessary (in my opinion & experience growing them for 15 yrs.+). To clarify for Bernard (I think sometimes you assume some things & also pass on misinformation, even if unintentionally). Perlite is NOT to make the mix drier, it's to make it AIRIER & more breatheable (by opening up air space btwn the other particles). Sans. are some of the few plants on which I use my own recycled mix as it's my firm opinion that they just don't care. If you'd like confirmation for this, go to Sans forum & look for posts by Pirate_Girl, a fellow NYer who also recycles her mix for Sans & has posted Sans. pix through the years. She also gave a talk/lecture here at her NYC Gardening Club some years ago on growing Sans. She, Jeff & Norma taught me a lot. Indoor Gardening takes time to get adjusted to. It's hard I know, but pls. give yourself time, be patient & keep on plugging.

My SO is in home building and remodeling, he says that bamboo is very popular, although so is the pergo type stuff. But if it was a small room, I would go with a real natural product. My brother did a cork floor in his bedroom, he likes it but it was very difficult to install and you have to seal it He likes it because it is less allergenic than carpet and soft underfoot. He installed it himself with a friend helping him. Bamboo has a beachy feel, but I would be concerned that because it has such a strong grain that it would fight with the rug and walls. I might seriously consider cork. But another option is real linoleum, (the kind made from wood) because it is very similar to cork and does not require the sealing. They look very similar.

"My house runs around 66 in day and 55 at nite." True New Englander LOL. I would freeze under such a regime. But useful to have this thread because I am thinking of leaving the camellia I'm trying to cross inside all winter. I leave my house at 67 round the clock. Years ago before I started putting most wintering plants in the garage, I definitely had some BLEs in the house, but cannot remember if a camellia was among them. Most notably were the "hardy citrus" I was trying to size up...and size them up I did. Over maybe 3 years, they went from cutting size to 3/8" caliper. But the first polar vortex winter finished them off! Very bad luck in terms of picking a year to plant them. However a slightly hardier 'Dunstan seedling' survives to this day...it had been bought a couple years earlier and was larger...although it's probably still several years away from flowering and fruiting. I just cut a huge overhanging red maple branch to give it more sun...$$$$ but had to be done.

Melissa, I cannot go on like this! Knowing that I am helping to enable you in your sickness is keeping me up at night (well that, and hanging out here, checking out photos of hosta & gardens). So, I have decided that I am going to make the sacrifice and help you to stop the insanity.

Listen to me very carefully. You are going to need to carefully package up all 44 new acquisitions, place them in a box (or a dozen boxes) and send them to me immediately. I know, I know... it's painful for me too, but I insist! It's the only way that this disease can be stopped!

I'm beginning to suspect that the Hosta vendors are preying upon our addiction!
Earlier this spring, a local nursery brought out thousands of Hostas in 4 & 5" pots and priced them at $1 each.
I "just happened" to be there when they opened, so I had my choice of plants, before the crowd arrived.
They didn't have a broad selection, but I found enough to fill up my car. (wish I had taken the van!).

Came home with:

They also had a number of older varieties, which I didn't need, but I did buy a S & S, for a corner spot (it's now 3' in diameter and still growing!). Would have purchased Abiqua Drinking Gourd, but they were large enough to determine that they were mislabeled.

Sorry kids, I forgot to pick up cereal this week and I meant to get more milk, but it slipped my mind!

Oh noooo! Now I have to look up pics of all your lists and I am certain there will be ones I gotta have! My list is getting longer already!

Incidently, none of the ones I ordered on 7/17 were on my list! Thanks to Denny & his sale!!

Thank goodness I work 40+ hours a week and sell fused glass on the side to help pay for this addiction!
