How far apart to plant dogwoods?

I'd like to plant some gray dogwoods (Cornus racemosa) at the edge of my yard to provide berries for the birds and to screen the view of my compost area from my neighbor's bedroom window. How close can I plant them without getting myself in trouble? I know they sucker, but I want them to screen the view fairly quickly. Is 4' apart too close? If I planted a couple of elderberries in there, too, would that look good? I need the advice of somebody who actually has these plants! Thanks.
