Assuming you mean natives, I don't know of any that would thrive in an environment other than a natural one where they were meant to be. Sorry.

Hey Mike, I just got a Logee's catalog..To be honest, I've never heard of Acokanthera. I thought your new plant was Sweet Olive.. Where have I been? Preparing for Christmas. I baked several pounds of cookies and bars for family/friends, 'approximately 200' different types. Decorated, bought and wrapped gifts, cleaned, visited, addresed Christmas cards, blah blah..In the meantime, I've pretty much neglected plants which I explained in another thread. Regretting it now. Lol, on the darts..I feel the same..lol.. Mike, truthfully..I didn't know about the darts..I researched your plant, then came across information about the dart and sap. I have two perrenial bushes in the garden called Winter Sweet and Winter Shrub..at first I wondered if this bush was the same plant as yours, but since Acokanthera is a native of Africa, it'd never surive here, not outdoors, anyways. Did you say the owner gave you his plant??? Did he supply care instructions? For instance, when and what to fertilize, light, soil, watering, etc? It's a very very pretty plant, and fragrant, too!! Wonder why it can't be propagated from cuttings.. I'd try as an experiment..lol..Wonder if it's fast or slow-growing?? Hope it's not too much work keeping it alive, especially in winter. AH HA!!! mother natures trickery again... the young tree looks tons different from a full grown mature tree! and yes, leaves are not nearly as big and round. We have them (royal empress/paulownia)growing in nearby woods (couple miles away) And no wonder the guy said it never produced a flower... he cuts it back every fall to 3'.... hense, Catman...the ever-sappling state its in. (but wait, he said it makes berries.. .hmmm.. .dont you need a flower to make the berry?) I really need to take a course one of these days!!! Im going to do something artsy with the leaves for sure. Thanks all... I feel dopey again, I should have known this!

(I know this post is a bit outdated, but here goes.) In regards to the bottom plant: Yes, I believe it's a Trailing Red Mezoo plant (Dorotheanthus bellidiformis). And yes, it can be grown indoors over the winter - or just as a house plant (for that matter). It does tend to get a big leggy for me indoors, but chop off the trailers and under a nice grow-light it comes right back (I live in a basement). Some of it's leaves may fall off due to lack of water, over-watering, or simply just stress. Just treat it like most succulents and give it a good soaking then let it go completely dry in-between. Has worked for me. It had flowers last year when it was on my shaded patio. No signs of the cute, little red flowers over this winter yet so I'm guessing I either need a tiny bit of fertilizer, more light, or simply just Time. We'll see. Mike, That is a variety of Daphne. There are about 500 kinds of Daphnes, but it looks to me that you have the evergreen winter blooming one. Leave it in the water even if all the leaves fall off. It will root, might take a while, but it is worth the wait. Good Luck! Happy New Year to you too!

I know all about "cool plants". ;)

What about Colocasia? Pretty easy to overwinter in a nice container indoors, and then move outside when appropriate (or even leave indoors if you want).

i like the spiderwort , its really pretty flowers and has like grass like foliage that gets bigger as it gets older. its native to where i live too.

How about some trees? Some that bloom don't get to big, or easy to trim, and some that don't have alot of blooms?(I don't want to be cleaning after my trees any more than, a little over) than needed.
Spiderwort is very pretty, but not what i'm looking for. ;0

Welcome to Gardenweb Goldfishgray! You may want to try the Houseplants forum. I'll link it below. There should be someone there that will know what trees can be grown inside.
Close to the top you will see a list of "related forums" that may be helpful to you.
First, try putting the word "tree" in the search box about 3/4 of the way down the page below. There's another search box at the very bottom of the page that would search EVERY forum instead of just the Houseplants forum so I don't think you want that one. Have fun!
