Day lily removal

Last year I concentrated on fighting japanese honey suckle and while that fight is not complete I can see progress so I've decided to start another front. Daylilies. I know from childhood lawn mowing days they recover from a scalping quite well. I have a swath about 20 feet by 40 on the north side of a hill that is badly infested. I think I'll try borrowing a propane torch and see how that works out. But I thought I would check in to see if there were any better ways to approach them.

You can probably dig up the corms (or bulbs or whatever the proper term is) fairly easily. They're shallow and not difficult to dig or pull - I've removed a lot myself.

I'm currently digging out a bed. I'm using a fork and they come out fairly easily, except that the clay soil is really dry and like a rock. I'm amazed at how many are growing in a space about 5'x10'. At least it was a nice cool day for digging. Nancy

Konrad Your Tiger lilies are beautiful. We have the lily beetles around, if you don't watch they will decimate the leaves. Looks awful. If you spot any beetles, even one, just squash it (yuck!) or drop into jar with some water in it. Anytime there is a black gunk on the underside of the leaves (that is actually excrement with larvae in it-yuck again!), knock it off with a spray from hose. Larvae will die if not on the leaves-no food. That's best way to control them. (See photo what happens if you leave them on...) Most important is to get rid of adults so they don't breed. Hope you never see them...Rina

moss in lily beds. removal??

If you can remove the moss and put it somewhere where its shady and moist it will be happy. I would think Lime would neutralize the soil so the moss wont grow. But be careful not to add to much. There is a forumula for adding lime. I found a link, I hope it helps. Here is a link that might be useful: lime and acidic soil

That is good to hear. I was afraid that they would come right back from the any little piece of root that was missed. Sounds like I have another weekend project.

Yes, they will come back from any little piece of root that is missed. But they come back as sprouts and you can easily manage those.

A garden fork is a good removal tool, I agree.

I have been pulling up thousands of wild yellow day lilies for the past 2 summers. they had completelly taken over my large yard. the best tool is a hand tool which is a curved garden fork. just THWOK! it hard right behind a lily and bear down/pull up with force. this will yank out the (hopefully) entire corm (or whatever it's called). sprouts will stubbornly shoot up within a week, lots of them . . . but keep at it and one day they will all be gone (i hope). any further advice from anyone? thanks.
