Nice plant, I have two, but no fragrance, no fall color. And rabbits like them. What about Deutzia 'Chardonnay Pearls' for your spot? Great color foliage all season, though no fragrance. Or Spirea 'Ogon'? Fabulous foliage, great bloom right now, good fall color. No pruning except for a little shaping.

Last winter, I boiled a cup of water, dropped the seeds in and then soaked them for 24-36 hours. I then sowed them in plastic containers with 4''-5'' of moistened seedling mix & vermiculite. I then placed them on the front porch - I did several containers from 3rd week of January thru 1st week of February. Germination occurred around late April - early May in all containers. Not sure of the exact germination rate, but certainly over 50%. After potting up a couple of times they were planted in the ground July-August. Ended up with 12-15 plants (could have had many more if needed). First years growth finished between 6'' - 10'' in height. Two years ago, only winter sowed 1 container and soaked the seeds just overnight - no seeds germinated.

Cactus dude, its all good. If you're not familiar with mid Atlantic and Northeast Beach culture, its radically different than going to a beach in California. California is more about day tripping to the beach. It's a year round beach climate and people go there to surf or picnic or watch the sunset. Here, our beach season is short. Businesses have three precious months to make money for the entire year. Rent is VERY expensive. Anything that sets you apart from your competitor or makes your place look more "beachy" will help make the season. Tourists generally don't do day trips either, as most of the east coast cities are a few hours drive from their favorite beach resorts. So visits are often in increments of every weekend, entire week's vacation or entire seasons renting a house (often year after year or generations). Repeat loyal customers are big business. The thousands spent on "disposable" palms can translate to hundreds of thousands for the beach club, bar, mini golf or restaurant. Same for the garden center that sold the palms and installed them. Growers too.

Thanks! After I posted my message, I found my butterfly gardening booklet from NYBG, which is quoted above. I do see a lot of spring azures in May each year (always clustered around my red osier dogwoods), so perhaps this is a second generation. As I said, I don't see any caterpillars, but I'll keep a lookout for more adults.
