Echinacea laevigata and Echinacea paradoxa

I bought both of these from Horizon Herbs earlier in the year. I was wondering how far apart I should plant them to keep from crossing the two. My understanding is that E. laevigata is increasingly hard to find and I'd like to keep any resulting seed pure so I can help preserve the flower.

I believe that Echinaceas are insect pollinated so unless you have miles separating them from each other and from neighbors gardens with Echinacea purpurea, I don't think you can do it without resorting to other methods, but then again I'm no expert on the topic.

According to Growing and Propagatig Wild Flowers by Harry R. Phillips, Echinacea purpurea, E. laevigata, and E. pallida can all be propagated by seed, root cuttings, and division. I would try cuttings or division for a 'pure' plant or you could try bagging flowers and pollinating them yourself to insure purity. I don't really know all the technique for the pollination thing but I'm sure you could ask Dr. Google for the answers. In fact, he was kind enough to give me the link below...

You can look up the Hibiscus at www.images.google.com Just type in the plant name. The H. dasycalyx is native to the Neches River Valley of Texas, the H. militaris is more widely distributed. The Neches Hibiscus comes about 60% true from seed, or I can root a cutting. The blooms are similar on both, but the Halberd leaf is a larger shrub, and the Neches has finely dissected leaves like a Japanese maple. lmk Sharon

I really like it--especially since I've failed with the new yellow/orange hybrids, the first of which were created a couple of towns over (so I assumed I'd be able to grow them). I can't remember if I planted the EP in '06 or '07, but it bloomed nicely last year and is huge this year. For me it's a strong, lusty plant that gets pretty tall. Right now it's waist-high, not yet blooming, and the clump looks to be about two feet across. I've got in one of the downhill, and thus comparably moist, spots in my sandy-soil yard. It also doesn't seem to mind being crowded (it holds its own against neighbors and weeds), a major attribute in my garden.

I've been growing Echinacea paradoxa (Bush's Coneflower) here in S.E. MN for over 10 years. Seeds can be fall planted or cold moist stratified for several months if planting in spring. My soil varies from silt to clay loam and plants seem to tolerate moist to dry conditions and our occasional -25F. temps. I've also found it easy to transplant when dormant in the early spring or late fall. Most of the Echinaceas will cross and you can get some interesting hybrids by gowing E. pallida, E. tennesseensis, or E. angustifolia next to each other. Bill

I grew this from seed many years ago. The original plants died out, many of them eaten by gophers, and I think cross-pollination with other echinaceas in the garden diluted the gene pool. I occasionally get seedlings that have a lot of E. laevigata traits but they are far from pure.
