transplanting jack in the pulpit

We have a small stand of Jacks at the northside foundation of the house. they've done quite well there for 4-5 yrs, butlast yr. after digging into them to attempt transplant of some less than 5" plants and to add leaf compost I was'nt successful at the new site.

that new site appeared to be as good or better than the original which had been mainly clay. those in the original site are coming on strong, apparently enjoying the added leaf compost.

What went wrong in the transplant? They seemed strong enough in the pots before going into the ground, any thoughts, ideas?
