Deformed Trilliums

Speaking of trilliums - a number of white and all my spotted wood trillium came up this year with crinkled deformed leaves. They still produced flowers but not as large as in previous years.

Any thoughts on what may have caused this?

They might be sick. Some pictures would help.

bogart, I have some trilliums that came up with deformed leaves and small flowers and size of plant is real small compared to some others. My thoughts..a couple of them. The first was it was an extremely hard winter here in N.W. Pa. and I thought that may have caused some damage to some of them and the second,I have walked around my little woodland areas early in the spring when they are just barely cracking thru the earth and have stepped on Trilliums,Jack in the pulpits and Hostas by mistake.
I noticed that when they came up later, many of the ones I had accidentally stepped on were crinkely deformed ,and some were real small. I had one Trillium about two inches tall which has its small flower only one inch off of the ground..Weird...I should try and take a picture of it...Tom in Pa.
