looking for recommendations: native plants online ordering....

Hi,

I live in northern New Jersey. I'm looking for excellent Native Plant nurseries, etc. Since most will be too far to drive to, I am mostly looking for Native Plant nurseries/farms, etc. that have an online inventory of their plants and can mail them to me.

Any recommendations? (I've looked into a few through searching online).

In NJ itself, there is a natives nursery in Hunterdon Co., don't remember its name. Rare Find has Jersey natives but they're more So. Jersey sandy soil natives.

Thanks for your responses, you two. I appreciate your helping me. Never visited Arrowhead Alpines. I used to go to school in East Lansing and now am in Saginaw. I took a look at the sites you recommended and I was a little overwhelmed by all the cultivated varieties available. I generally prefer wildtype varieties or cultivated varieties that have been around for a long time. This year I may depend on the generosity of friends and family for plant starts and cuttings - turn about is fair play, right? I don't want to spend a lot of money. Happy Monday! Joe

I used hirts-gardens out of Ohio and have been happy with them so far. I purchased 4 jamaican hot red scotch bonnet peppers for 5.99 and 4 carribean red habeneros and they came in very healthy looking. They ship out really fast. I am very new at this but last year I purchased from several other vendors and was not satisfied. At that price it cannot hurt to try them. Here is the link. grandbb, Here is a link to the Arizona Native Plant Society. They have a series of eight booklets - sort of like field guides - that should be helpful too. Plus, they area very affordable at $2.25 each. You can purchase them locally at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix or Boyce Thompson Arboretum near Superior, but if you have time you could order them before your visit. I hope this helps. For mail order I have used Ernst Conservation Seeds (http://www.ernstseed.com/) a number of times for plants and seed. Their catalog is pretty good about specifying the "ecotype" of the species and whether the species is native or not. I have also used Wild Life Nursery in Wisconsin (I don't think they have a web site) for bare root plants and seed -- I am growing some Duck Potatoes I got from them and they're big now. I am also attaching a link for native plant nurseries for the Chesapeake Bay area which includes a few New Jersey nurseries. I have not done business with any of these New Jersey nurseries so I can't comment on their quality. Steven,

For perennials, annuals, and biennials I highly recommend Toadshade Wildflower Farm. I'm becoming a strong believer in having better luck with plants bought from nearby, and Toadshade is located in Frenchtown NJ. They propagate responsibly, which is important, especially for some of the rarer plants.

Try Ciccioni Farms in Jackson, NJ They have some native plants and you can look thru their site to see what is avai lable currently otherwise the catalog is $5! Wildearth used to be in business in partnership with them but don't think Wildearth is currently selling anything so Ciccioni may have bought their stock.
