design questions: meadows vs. borders/ cottage vs. wild

So far I've been growing native grasses and wildflowers (and some non-natives)in a meadow-style arrangement--grasses in large groups with wildflowers growing in between. Vegetables/herbs, fruits, roses are all grown in separate part of the garden. The trouble is my garden is small and often the meadow style planting can look messy, especially up close. I'm considering mixing everything up more, using a cottage garden/border style instead of the wild meadow style--basically using natives as cottage garden plants. I think it may be more suitable for the small space, and because I use drip type irrigation the differing water requirements wouldn't be much of an issue.

On the other hand, when the meadow looks good it looks really good and I hate to give it up.

I realize it's just a question of taste, but I just can't make up my mind. What do you all think? Any experience or advice to share?

Thanks

Bill
