Visited Mr. Cory and his gardens today. Came home with three new hosta plus a couple of large lady ferns and wild begonia. Here is Holy Mole

And this is Fragrant Dream, Hostapedia says darker green and faster growing than Fragrant Bouquet.

The third new one is Love Pat.

Anyone have pics of mature specimens of any of these?

I feel terrible that I missplled the man's name. Its Cory not Cori. The place was great and well worth the 1.75 hour drive (one way). There was no deer fence. Robert (the owner) did say that he sprayed with liquid fence and in the fall would thin the herd a little on his own. You can see his deer blind in the 2nd picture near the middle, off in the distance and his bait station at about 3 o'clock in the photo. I asked him about seeds and he says he rarely has seeds because the deer always get to the scapes first. He did have two originals. I'm regretting not picking one up while I was there. I absolutely loved the fallen tree with the Junes planted in it. What a cool place to put hosta.

I made a trip to Mr. Cory's yesterday. This was my second load this year. He never fails to amaze me. His hosta are so beautiful and healthy. Nothing over $10. I again filled my car. I am particularly in love with Abba Dabba Do. I have traveled to hosta farms and nurseries all over Ohio but nothing holds a candle to Mr. Cory's. His fern selection is particularly nice this year as well. If you live or are passing through Ohio, this is a "must visit."

Well, it was listed initially as S. dolichantha Whitehouse, and I noticed the nomenclatural conflict with the Chinese sage, which I had seen on herbarium sheets. The plant was carried by Dan Hinkley at Heronswood. Since John Kartesz was working on the Floral Synthesis, I apprised him of the discrepancy, and he probably sought out Alizar, and a taxonomist (Cory) made an official correction. Since the Chinese S. dolichantha had been first named, it got to keep its name. I just checked my three spiral bound Warnock handbooks, and it was not listed. Now that I crystallize my thinking more, it was probably in the Texas volume of Rickett's Wildflowers of the US where I first saw it.

Mr. Cory is alive and well

Bob's story is long. As I understand it, he was having health problems and decided to retire. He was looking for something to do and took up growing hostas in his shady hillside garden in Chillicothe, Ohio. Well, the exercise and healthy living was a great thing for Bob. He outlived his first wife, married again, and is still doing hostas. Pat and I haven't visited Bob for several years so I thing a visit is in the works after daylily season.

Nice late-season grabs, Hostahosta. I wish Mr. Cory's was close to me. Sorry, no mature pics. Mine are only slightly bigger than yours. Actually, your 'Fragrant Dream' is bigger than mine. Nice pics by Paul, though.

Givemeflowers, yup, in most light conditions, 'Holy Mole' keeps it's colors very nicely. Great-smelling flowers, too. : )

HostaHosta...you sure picked up some beauties....loving Hole Mole!! And that's quite the size of leaves on your Love Pat....And no wonder I love your HM...in it I also see Avocado and Guacamole...one big, happy family...I think I'm going to add Holy Mole to keep my Guacamole company and keep adding fragrance to my garden....not to mention the rhyme....holy mole guacamole..

Old Dirt, that's an awesome 'Holy Mole'. I think next season, mine will be five years old. If it looks like anything close to yours, I'll be ecstatic.

Thx Jo & Don. It is my plant and one of my favorites. It is also one of the last to go dormant, still looks good here while several others are looking poor. I think next year I will try to add more from that family or group.

Very nice h.'Holy Mole' shown here, thanks! Mine is planted just this year, got it from LOTG, but looks beautiful. I have also others of that family, love them all, especially that they like the sun. I have 2 h.'Guacamole', 2 'Avocado', 'Fragrant Dream' and just got a 'Fried Bananas' from Glenbrook Farm. People must see me bending down to enjoy the flowers of those, nice scent. Bernd
