Is it a Jack in the Pulpit? Julie? Anyone?

We're thinking of buying a small wooded (out in the bush) acreage and I saw this yesterday. I want it to be a jack in the pulpit :-) The leaves are gone so I couldn't Id them, but the seeds look like it might be. Is it?

Yes it is and the pod is ripe. I have no doubt you will find others. By this time of year leaves may have dwindled or been eaten.

Yes, Joyce, that is definitely a JIP!! You should see several little ones next spring!

And in case you don't buy that acreage and/or you don't see any baby JIP's, just give me a holler and I'll fix you right up! I have tons....

I would love to trade for Jack in the Pulpit. I have a perfect natural spot for them. I have two beautybush shrubs out back. They look like the first photo in the link. I have not tried to collect seeds and it is dark now, but in the morning, I can check what is out there. Take a look at my trade list and see if there is anything you like. I would! You know you need to keep those seeds damp, right. Don't let them dry out when they are ready. Maybe ship them in damp perlite or peat? They need winter stratification too, sort of like hellebores. This is what I have recently read, anyway. Pls check my trade list to see if I have anything you would like to trade a few of those seeds for. Thank you Sheryl

I wish they were viable in the mail. I have a bumper crop and could share!! I have some with red based flowers and some white. They are so fun to watch emerge and unfurl. I am in awe at how many volunteered to live in the woods this year!! I am attempting to dig some for a plant sale in a few weeks. My daughter is a jr. volunteer and I am donating some perennials for their fund raiser/garage sale. Jacks are tricky to transplant in the spring. So far they are looking good!

Thanks Paul and Linda :-) I think I'll take a stake and flag out there and mark the spot. I imagine where there's one, there are others, but that way I'll know where to look. And if I can't find any in the spring, I'll give you that holler Linda!

And now, I'm off to Rochester for the next few days. Wish it had been the same weekend as the swap, but there's always next spring!

Is that Buckthorn peeking behind perchance?

Not buckthorn, as it would be the last plant to turn fall color, if it turns at all. Looks to be something in the dogwood family, but not sure.

Good to see some of you are still here. I think JIP is protected, is it not? I'm not sure why, it has invaded one of my gardens and it seems to want to take over.

Arisaema triphyllum (JIP) is not protected. That would be silly. LOL
