Dappled Willow 'Hakura Nishiki' again

A neighbor down the block has a front garden sporting one of these willows on a standard about 5' high. it's quite beautiful. I believe it's in its second season, i.e, he overwintered it, but I haven't had a chance to talk to him. Has anyone experience with the tree form of this plant? I also saw a standard form of salix purpurea 'nana' (arctic blue willow) at a nursery recently. Also very handsome. Anyone tried that? thanks. GaryStPaul

The 'Hakura Nishiki' is a borderline plant, I wouldn't be afraid to try it as long as you understand it has about a 50/50 chance. I have clients with them, about 1/2 have made it. There is also a house down the street from me with one, they initially had two.

I have just recently seen the standard form of the ABW...Love the way that looks, I would say it would be much hardier, but have not had personal experience. I would not be afraid to try it though. If it acts like I think it will, it will be a big thing...

Thanks, Helen. You gave me that advice on the HN earlier this year and, being a gambler, I put one in and have my fingers crossed. I'll try to get my neighbor's opinion on the standard tree form and will pass it along.

On the ABW standard: it never occurred to me that it could grow huge, might be a good reason to think of something else. Of course I pictured it as though it was a kind of bonsai, staying neatly, politely, and permanently within modest bounds, ha.

Hi, glad you've gotten started. Yes, it's better just to leave the maples alone for now, though you can always e.g. put a stick in the ground near the middle (a thin one, so it doesn't kill all the little roots near the trunk) and make just one or two slight, gentle bends in the trunk around it (not more or it'll look unnatural like the silly things sold in H-D, or W-M) and fix with twist ties or cotton cord. Just keep a very close eye on them so the cord never cuts into the bark. Willow is not a bad choice at all, just unfortunately subject to a lot of pests and diseases, but that's one's pretty. Because it can take so much water, don't worry til next Mar/Apr. (when you repot) about the soil mix. You'd really have to work at it to drown it! By lead stem I guess you mean 2 things .. the trunk, and the 'apex' the top of it, and main 'stem' or leader. There are trees that don't develop visibly obvious 'leaders', but I think that's what you meant. If you like the other branch for a leader (and ultimate apex) then tie it carefully up against the current one til next year (everything takes a year to 'take'!) and cut back the current one. It's not good esthetically to have two, of course.

Yeah, a newly planted anything is different than an established plant. Rig up a temporary shade covering for it until the heat goes down & keep it deeply watered but not flooded. We planted one on the south/west side of our house 2 years ago in early spring and had little rainfall that season. We had to baby it like crazy that first summer but it was fine by fall when the rains came & has been fine ever since. We live 75' from Long Island Sound so ours shrugs off salt air/spray as well as full sun & winter winds. PJM will also do well in a part-shade environment but they seem to be leggier (not as full). PJM is a blooming machine & will even bloom in quite a bit of deep shade. But, it does BEST, as the tag instructs, "exposed to the elements". That's why New Englanders love this plant so much...we have lots of "elements"! lol PJM was hybridized by Ed Mezzitt of Weston Nurseries in Hopkington, MA back in the 1940's for New England landscapes. It's a tough little bugger!

Lisa- Willows are messy plants that will drop a lot of small branches, leaves, and catkins to clog your pool filter. So never a good choice near a pool. And I doubt that they would survive the first winter in a container in zone 5a. (See below) I don’t know of any bamboo that will survive in a container in zone 5a. There are a few types of bamboo that will survive in the ground, but not many. A container is exposed to air temperatures on all but the bottom, rather than being surrounded by a huge mass of soil from the ground around it like with in-ground plants. Because of this, the container soil will freeze solid in cold weather and will have many cycles of freeze-thaw over the course of the winter. Based on my experience as well as what I read, few plants can survive this. The ground, because only the top surface is exposed to air temperatures, may freeze a few inches down, but doesn’t freeze below that unless it is in an area that is without plants, mulch, or snowcover, and even then there won’t be the kind of temperature extremes and swings that happen in even the largest containers because it takes a long time for in-gound soil temperatures to change due to the enormous mass. Year-round container growing works for warmer areas, but not zone 5. I have found one plant only of many tried that will grow and survive in a container, ribbon grass, something that is too much of a thug to let loose in a garden. However, it isn’t tall enough to votive you much privacy, perhaps 2’ tall. So plant large, quick-growing annual vines on trellises in your pots, something like some of the larger cultivars of mandevilla vine or Black-eyed Susan vine (Thunbergia) or scarlet runner beans. Add some groundcover or draping plants like wave petunias or golden creeping Jenny and you will have a colorful set of pots for your pool that will offer privacy. Be sure to read up on container soils and have some type of irrigation system to keep them looking good. Or consider freestanding screens that can be moved into place to provide privacy.

I don't remember clematis every coming up so late. I think I lost a new one, however, despite mulching. Maybe it just was too soggy of a spot. I still hope it comes up but time's running out. I also lost my Japanese blood grass and northern lights grass, but they were soggy spot. My Endless summer hydrangea survived fairly well as did the Tiger Eyes sumac. I had big sections where my lamium died out completely, which totally surprised me. Sometimes the plants survive and stay green, other times at least the roots survive. I'm not worried though, enough did survive that maybe I can fill in the area once again. Glen

I have had one here in Duluth for 2 years. That great snow mulch really helps, I'm sure. It is looking leggy, and I have never done much pruning. Do you think I should cut it off at the ground in the Spring? If I wanted to try a standard, do I just choose one branch and but back everything else? The color is nice in the early spring, but mine is in a more shady spot than partly shady, and it seems to fade out later in the summer.

Hey there Gary-
I have a 'Hakura Nishiki' growing in my yard- and your welcome to take cuttings to try it out for yourself-
Mine has it's best color on new growth- but it seems to flush out with growth a couple of times during the year-
I have to really protect it from the deer in the winter- they really seem to like how it tastes.

We've had this in our yard for several years now. It's been let to do its own thing for a while but this year I finally went back to it and hacked it back down -- and the dappled variegation really showed on the new growth of leaves after that. So I think a good hard spring pruning would keep it looking "fresh" on a yearly basis.

Thanks, erikmsp, good info. When you say "good hard pruning" what do you mean, in terms of how far down? Mine has really bushed out in the course of the season, but the new growth has been all green. GaryStPaul
