Wintersowed last year, looking good this year!
Comments (7)Carrie, I so do! It's a good thing I can't find any more seed for it or I'd be spreading it all over the garden. It is fantastic. Love the foliage too...kinda blue-green and very soft looking. Thank you all so much for your comments. As I said, hardly anyone sees my garden and it is so nice to get some feedback. The flax just happened. A packet of seeds from Walmart and boom. Last year they didn't look so great - all floppy and sparse blooms. But this year they are magnificent. I am really loving them....See MoreHow do you know if you have voles or moles?
Comments (6)Moles produce tunnels in the yard or garden that result in the soft ground that has been mentioned. At times moles will push giant mounds of dirt aboveground. In yards, the grass can be damaged due to disruption of the roots, so above the tunnels the grass can become yellowed or brown. As to voles, I've never seen evidence that I know of that a vole has disrupted the ground other than at the point of attack. I know a vole has struck when I notice a hosta starting to yellow, and if I look more closely I realize I can lift it out of the ground and there's nothing much left but the leaves, which were sitting in a small hole....See MoreOrganic vole control! Comments (6)Sorry. I got side tracked watching YouTube for those film clips of the title intros, and forgot the link to it. Classy black cat who earns his keep. Comments (4)AND I just saw the fattest chipmunk I have ever seen. Scampering (or waddling) between the raised beds. The raised beds all have hardware cloth bottoms, but this is our kitchen garden, it is about 12 ft across the front, the other three sides are brick foundation. Which usually makes for great growing conditions. I have taken the electric fence down and the cats are having a field day. (but banished to the basement so they don't yak up vole parts on my bed again) They are old but not that feeble. They just wait and wait, you think they are asleep and then a paw goes down a hole and comes up with something. I think two plants are a total loss, but the rest seem to be surviving. I will try putting the hardware cloth down about a foot. I will be adding amendments and re tilling over the winter. They are forecasting heavy rains today and tomorrow, the squash have just had it....See Moreshade_tolerant
