Tall Goldenrod--where to buy

OK--for years there's been a field near my house with cows and, in the fall, tall goldenrod.

The cows are now gone and they're building a subdivision.

I would like to plant some in my garden.

I can't seem to find tall goldenrod, 'Solidago altissima'.

Do any of you know anywhere I can get it?

If I can't find it, would planting another type of goldenrod provide the same wildlife benefit?

(Yes, I garden organically. This will go into the 'regular' garden rather than the 'butterfly garden', because the neighbors can see the 'butterfly garden', and people around here think goldenrod's a weed.)

If I remember correctly in my perusing of the internet. I believe there was quite an impressive native plant nursery in Texas. I had the http, but I deleted it because the plants would not fare well here - too cold. Do a google search for native plant nurseries in texas you will probably find it

If you can't find it from anyone else, contact me in the fall and I can either collect seed or dig some plants to send. It grows along the side of the road here. There is also alot of Queen Anns Lace and Ironweed if your interested.

If you want a standard size tree I would take a drive to Ball Ground GA. and see Mr Lawson. he is one of the expert on heirloom apples and has one of the largest collection in georgia. if you are planting just one tree have him custom graft a tree with different varieties for pollinating. The big box stores around here (Menards, Home Depot, Lowes, Tractor Supply, Farm and Home, etc.) have begun selling something 2 of the locally owned garden supply stores have been selling for many years, something called West Michigan Mix, a blend of Kentucky Blue Grass, Perennial Rye, and a Fescue, so there will most likely be something similar in your area of California, although probably not that blend. Just do not get something called "contractors blend" which is mostly weedy grasses and quite cheap.

See if you can find a S. stuckii, it has round tall leaves that are very thick, ususlally only one per node. It is about 5 inches thick and very round with a small chanall, no larger then a pencil. There may be more then one clone of this species. I'm am not in business so can't sell any. I don't sell to members of this forum. on forums. If you are unwilling to pay for good seed, then go to Walmart and use theirs. You get what you pay for with seed. What you get from the Seed Superstore is seed with no weeds in it. Look at the Guaranteed Analysis of seed on the shelf. It will tell you how much seed versus weed versus Other Crop. The seed you want is fairly heavy but the noxious weed seed is more like dust. The percentages on the bag go by weight so a huge fescue outweighs a bermuda seed by a factor of 1000. So when you see a weed value of 0.1 %, that could mean 10,000 bermuda or creeping bentgrass plants coming out of a 10 pound bag. 0.01% could mean 1,000 weed plants. 0.001% could mean 100 plants. How many weeds can you tolerate? Is this a full renovation or just overseeding the existing lawn?

Queen Anns Lace is NOT native in the US. It's native to Europe and Asia.

Google the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center. It's in Texas.

I knew the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center didn't sell seeds online, and only a few in their gift shop, but online they directed me to Native American Seed, which sells bundles of Tall Goldenrod roots!

If anyone else needs them, the link is below.

If the pasture next to your yard had tall goldenrod, perhaps another pasture or roadside nearby still has it. Once you have identified the plant you want, you can dig a chunk of ground with the goldenrod in it, move to your garden, and you should have your own patch of goldenrod. Most of the larger field-growing goldenrods spread vegetatively - each plant produces new shoots to create an ever-expanding patch of goldenrod. This means that you can remove a part of the patch without doing much damage to the original patch.

I don't think you'll have any problem securing permission to dig a shovelful of goldenrod from private land. Its neither rare, delicate, nor worth much money.

Thanx...but...

Digging up anything, even if it's "neither rare, delicate, nor worth much money" I just don't do. Personal prefernece here.

Ummm...I can't find the patches-- they're already gone! Yup, the streets are being laid this week. And I don't know the landowner to ask them (and the guy in the bulldozer wouldn't count, even if he didn't immediately ask me to leave.)

So yes, I did need a different source other than the pasture near me.

Be careful what you wish for. As you might have gathered from some of the responses here, tall goldenrond has a reputation for being a 'thug' in prairie/meadow plantings. For example, here is a quote (emphasis added) from the Prarie Nursrery website:

"Be careful if aggressive, weedy plants are located adjacent to your future prairie site. Some plants can creep into your meadow by means of underground rhizomes, while others have seeds that can blow in on the wind. Problem neighbors include Quackgrass, Smooth Bromegrass, Johnsongrass, Canada Goldenrod, TALL GOLDENROD, Canada Thistle, Grey Dogwood, Sumac, Buckthorn, Tatarian and Japanese Honeysuckles and Multiflora Rose, to name a few."

There are MANY goldenrod species out there, and not all are problematic. I have had no problems with showy goldenrod (Solidago speciosa), which re-seeds moderately to form nice clumps in my garden. As its name suggests, it is prettier than most other goldenrods including tall (IMHO).
