Comments (12)The brush pile is at the end of the woods, Bernd. Result of the 2007 ice storm, and habitat for a lot of creatures, possums, lizards, snakes, and last winter I saw weasel tracks in the snow next to it. Lots of birds shelter there in the winter. It also makes a barrier against the unkept, overgrown mess of honeysuckle/poison ivy property behind us and slows the deer down some. Tho we are allowing it to compost down, and next spring we'll plant a row of oak leaf hydrangeas on our side of it. I have been piling my garden debris in front of it for years and this summer we're going to top it off with a truckload of mushroom compost, and another of leafmulch from the city. It is a work in progress! We are going to keep a trap out for a while but I think this was an old bachelor ground hog. The female lived under my studio for a long time until she acquired such an extended family that they became a problem. We trapped 10 of them out of there last summer. Comments (26)- She often barks at me to get me to go into another room. - She demands 1 1/2 to 2 mile walks 3-4 times a day. - She will hold out for days to get the food she wants. - Last Fall she dragged me downhill into a tree (squirrel) and my knee was swollen and numb for three months. - If there is a fly in the house she runs after it and onto furniture (no, no) and barks so the lamps vibrate until either she or I kill it. - Frightens the neighbors or passersby by barking at them. If they come over she licks them. If they keep going she keeps barking. - She wakes me up at 5:30 or 6 every morning. - She barks, if that doesn't work then talks to me and as a last resort comes over and puts her head on my lap and looks up at me until she gets exactly what she wants. - She will come and sit at attention just out of reach to make me lean toward her and then she turns and heads off leading me to what she wants. Look at her dish....food. Stop short of the door, look for leash....walk. Nose up to the door...wants out on the deck. Front door....open it to look out of the storm door and guard the house. Finished her water and wants more. - Berserk....squirrel, raccoon, turkey, groundhog (especially), cat, dog, bike, bee, snake....... Should I go on?...See MoreShow Us Your Gardens - A photo Thread - July 2014 Part I
Comments (52)I also keep checking back to this thread. I figure ... If I can't grow some things, at least I can admire them in your gardens. Indian Pipe.... wow! Thanks, Steve. I haven't seen that in a long time but used to find it growing in the woods in front of my old house. Your lilies are opening and the yellow one looks like one of mine, which are all done for this year. (I just cut back all their seed pods.) Yes, I miss their scent which even reached up onto the back deck. And I also enjoy seeing so many of the things I've lost over the years. Kind of the Ghost of Gardens Past thread, for me. Susan, your Stokesia is gorgeous.... that's one plant that I miss. I tried two of them and then gave up. The Veronicastrum that nekobus grows... loved those white spears. That's one of the reasons why I planted H. 'Light the Way', which is still showing well in our yard. White kind of sparkles in the garden, I think. Of course, the David Austin roses and especially the Lace Cap hydrangeas. Well, in all honesty, I haven't grown the Lace Caps because there just isn't any room in our small yard. I miss my Monarda, but it took up too much space. And the space that some of you have! That I admire. Sped your contrasts of orange/blues and purples just stand out against all of those green fields. Nhbabs... the way that you contrast colors and textures make your gardens so much fun to look at. So keep posting. This thread is my garden tour. Molie...See MoreWho eats my hostas and heucheras?
Comments (19)i dont understand how a tall deer .. can eat under a net ... ergo.. i am thinking small ... and i dont see the deer putting the net back after eating ... though if they were that cooperative.. perhaps i would be a bit more lenient towards them.. lol .. but i think you missed my point.. or more likely.. i didnt make myself clear ... you need to sherlock this out.. we cant tell you so you can go research it ... it is not like some wraith mysteriously hovers down to the ground and attacks ... deer.. being large.. leave cloven hoof prints in soft garden .. and a large version of what look like monster rabbit droppings .. and tend to rip and tear off the leaves ... rabbits.. well.. you saw the link ... leave no prints ... and tend to cleanly slice the leaf petiole at the ground.. and then nibble away ... they do not tend to destroy a whole plant.. and more often than not.. cut a leaf or two.. then hop away without eating them .. and that really PO's me.. as i can accept a little damage to feed mother nature.. but that is just wasteful.. whats that all about ... i presume this happened in summer.. and you probably dont have a pic to help us.. but i dont know how we get past pure speculation without some further observations from you ... BTW ... went out for a walk in my 20 degree winter up here in MI ... in a foot of snow.. i saw rabbit tracks.. and deer tracks ... and if they are here in miserable winter.. they will most likely be here.. come spring ... check out the link again ... good luck ken Here is a link that might be useful: after your walk about.. substitute 'deer' in the google search .......See MoreBabka NorCal 9b
