Identification help --- edible?

I am SO excited to find this forum! I am scouring the fields and forests with Euell Gibbons and Bradford Angier's books in hand, but being a complete newbie, I find myself unsure of most things and positively clueless about the rest.

I wonder if anyone could help me identify a few of the plants I looked at today. I'm hoping to 'get a grip' on the few plants that are out for winter before the spring/summer explosion comes up and makes things much more challenging. I took about 15 different (unidentified) plant photos today alone but will post them a few at a time, if that's all right.

These, I'm totally unsure of:

The toothy lobed guy, I thought I'd seen in my books, but now I can't find much like it.

On the right, same mystery plant.

On the left, I originally thought maybe purslane, but now I know better -- it's not succulent at all, very dainty.

It grows tallish with those spiral layers going all the way up, but the leaves are tiny.

This is a very furry, succulent plant. You could drink from the leaves. Not much of a taste. :)

Someone in the NE who tramps through the woods in winter has probably seen all these plants a lot -- any suggestions on what they might be are welcome.

I believe the first plant is some type of avens (Geum sp.). I included a link below to a picture of the water avens because it had a nice leaf picture.

Hard to see details of the leaves in the second picture but here goes. Fuzzy leaves in a rosette (here in Wastern NY State) tend to often be common mullein (Verbascum thapsus). But the leaves don't look mullein like. They look more primrose (Oenothera sp.) like. Evening primroses are reasonably common. Compare pictures of the leaves of these plants to the plant you have. See if one of them matches.

One word of warning, identification is fun. So is finding some wild edibles but be very careful! You should never taste anything that is not identified as safe! Plants can feed us, heal us, and kill us. Take care and be smart.

The first is a Geum. Not sure which one.

[NOT the IMG code] second plant.. if you could get a pic .. in focus.. of that one hanging leaf.. we might get somewhere.. if i saw those berries in summer.. i would think wild cherry.. prunus serotina.. but they should be long gone.. in nov ... the first looks so familiar.. for MI ... but i am blanking this morning ... honeysuckle.. WAG ... which is endemic in MI ... see link if you could mark the plants.. and get pic of actual leaves... or even dead ones from the ground.. it would probably be a lot easier than looking at sticks.. lol...a red berry isnt that great an ID variable by itself ... may the force be with you ... ken Here is a link that might be useful: hey honey ...

Citruslover, I will give you my non-expert opinion on an olive tree. Arbequina seems to be recommended quite often for home growing and/or patio growing despite the fact that it is not a dwarf tree. I planted one that was about 5ft tall about a year ago in a half whiskey barrel. It produced probably 10 pounds or more of olives for me this year. It has not grown much taller, but has filled out some. I used miracle grow moisture control potting soil and the tree seems to be as healthy as can be. There is most likely someone else on this forum that will recommend some concoction of soils that is much better suited, but this is what has worked for me. The only problem I have seen was some scale, but I used Insecticidal Soap to keep it in check. Just make sure you bring your tree inside when temperatures get down around freezing and I think you will be fine. From my research it seems they adapt quite well to a decent sized pot, and if necessary, you can prune them back to whatever size you need. As far as fertilization, I dont have much input for you. I know that olives are not very heavy feeders, and I plan on just adding some compost to mine in the spring and seeing how it does. One thing I recommend before you start this endeavor is to research how laborious it is to turn an olive into something edible. You cannot eat them right from the tree as they are very hard and bitter. There are several ways to cure them. I tried brining with salt water and marinating them this year and they came out o.k. but it takes several weeks to brine them with several water changes in between. They also did not all ripen at the same time so I ended up with several small batches that I was changing the water in at different times. One arbequina is that the olives are a little on the small size, about the size of a large blueberry, so if you want great big olives maybe you should look into another variety. The last thing I will tell you is that there is a wealth of knowledge on this forum about these trees and I am quite sure all of your questions have been asked before. You could have probably found all of this information and more by using the search bar.

You might want to check out local people for the hardiness and eventual size of these plants. I am at 8300' in CO, zone 5a and quite windy. Elderberries get ~8' tall here. Service berries get 6' or so. All this with irrigation. Other plants which should in theory grow here, don't. A lot of plants have a smaller mature size in harsher climates, like mine. You don't give the other details about your location (like wind, etc) but many of these plants may end up smaller than they would if grown in a warmer/wetter location. BTW here I have yet to see Carmine Jewel cherry get much higher than 4'.

If you have a fireplace, you could cut them up for firewood. It perplexes me as to why these are still being offered in the nursery trade. It's like if the grocery store was selling food made from industrial toxic waste.

Oops. I guess it is the third plant you were asking about that my mullein/primrose comments apply to.

The second is a baby plant and is hard to tell. Future leaves would probably look a bit different. It does, however, look rather cleavers like. Cleavers, bedstraw, and sweet woodruff are all in the Galium genus. Check out these for comparison.

This is incredibly exciting -- you guys are GOOD! Thank you so much for identifying these finds. I find it very hard to ID a plant that doesn't appear in my handful of guide books, unless you have a seasoned guide ... or the help of people like you. And when I was looking up the plants you suggested I found a few more I'd run across whose identities were previously a total mystery. LOVE it!

Very exciting, again! Thank you so much for taking the time and sharing your knowledge. Help like this transforms these attempts from something a little frustrating into something much more successful and encouraging.

OK, I have one more question before the season changes! Until researching tonight I was convinced the plant below was an early, edible curly dock.

But, the leaves are sort of spear-shaped and have those long stems. And even if you account for the insect damage, they don't look particularly curly. On closer inspection as I check out the photo they do seem slightly toothy around the edges.

This is definitely one of the earliest plants to emerge almost anywhere in moist, open fields where the greens (like garlic mustard) thrive. So I'm hoping they make good salad greens, whatever they are. I'm sorry for the blurriness of the photo.

It's not Rumex crispus. I included the USDA link to dock (Rumex sp.) pictures. Any other day I could tell you what this is...it's on the tip of my tongue but I can't seem to recall at the moment.
