'edible' berries or tasty

I have read conflicting descriptions about amelanchier arborea berries being more tasty than blueberries, and others saying they are dry, chewy, pithy, and only the laevis species being tasty other then to a survivalist.Any opinions?

Hi-I am familiar with amelanchier, I think blueberries are better but I have tried some amelanchier that are pretty good. I think they are best in a muffin or quick bread. I am not a survivalist but I do have an interest in edible plants especially wild ones... kim

Amelanchier arborea is native here in the Missouri Ozarks. Like Kim, I'm not a survivalist, but find the fruit to be wonderful in baked goods, when I can beat the birds to my crop! RW

Don't know that I'd put it in the urban(or rural) legends category so quickly, but my friend did bring up the question(s) of: 1)what analytical methods were used when buckeyes were proclaimed to be 'poisonous' - how accurate were they, back in 1910(or earlier)? 2)Did whoever did this assay sample a large selection of nuts at varying degrees of 'ripeness', and did they sample just the nuts, or the nut, leaves, stems, roots, and the groundhog caught up in the roots? From a veterinary standpoint, most of the 'buckeye' poisoning we encounter is in early spring, when the various Aesculus species are among the first things in the forest to 'green up', and if you have cattle running in woodland/forest settings, and they're hungry - they will eat the fresh new foliage and become poisoned.

If you have a fireplace, you could cut them up for firewood. It perplexes me as to why these are still being offered in the nursery trade. It's like if the grocery store was selling food made from industrial toxic waste.

Scarlett runner beans edible/tasty?

Scarlet runner beans are grown in every British vegetable garden solely for eating. No one would consider growing them for ornament only. We have dozens of named cultivars. And not all have scarlet flowers. It is important to eat them young and tender and we eat them almost exclusively as green beans. They also make tasty pickles. Keep picking. If you leave any flowering will slow down. Once the beans are visible bulging the pods will be too stringy. At this time of year I am giving them away to the neighbours. I have also tried them as shellies and as dried beans. Not worth the effort imo but they might pass in a soup. Runner Beans

I find it depends on the individual bush. I have a 'secret' spot for amalanchier and some are sweet, some are dry, etc. I think we have A. alnifolia? Or some such species in the Northwest Cascades.

Amelanchier x grandiflora 'Autumn Brilliance' is very tasty. It's a cross of A. arborea and A. laevis. The Minnesota native A. stolinifera is larger, and quite sweet and tasty too, although the skin can be a bit tough. Northern MN colloquial name: Indian Plums.

I tasted the Amelanchier canadensis and stolonifera and not sure if it was laevis or arborea they all taste better than blueberries to me but I'm talking the highbush blueberries the lowbush are supposed to taste better. Sarah
