Yeah, the photo is of the Sugar Shack buttonbrush. Cornus kousa is pretty common here as a yard tree but they may have seen another dogwood. They said it was a thin stemmed bush and that they don't remember the leaves being as shiny as the ones in the photo. I've checked online Chinese literature and found nothing that adds up. Thanks

not sure if this helps, but I have wild blackberries all over my rural (Citrus Co) property. However, because of the typically very dry springs, the berries almost never amount to anything - they are dried up little husks. Maybe looks around in the summer when it is wet for things like muscadines? Geez, I recall picking wild blackberries in Oregon is September - they were everywhere and huge and tasty.
