Native seeds

I am looking for sources for the following native plants. I'd like to buy somewhat larger quantities ( that is, more than a packet) because I want to create stands of these plants within mixed habitat. I am working on encouraging some endangered Michigan insects.

Any guidance is appreciated!

Where are you in Michigan? I'm in Grand Rapids with a cottage in Sparta (a bit north of GR). I planted Wild Blue Lupines along with many other native plants last year and I'm going to continue to expand every year. I have a packet of Lupine seeds I could share. I have tons of other natives I could share, as well. Check out my trade list or e-mail me with a wish list and I'll see what else I have.

Hi MaxG- I'm afraid I'm no help whatsoever, having only gotten here about a month ago myself. I'm sure others will have offerings, but I just wanted to welcome you to the blast furnace, lol. If you are out and about right now, the Red Yucca (Heperaloe parviflora) is going to seed - they're a kind of grassy looking plant with coral spikes of blooms. I'd wait until the seed heads turn brown and harvest some of those puppies. Tough as nails, nice splash of color, very xeric. Have you tried your hand at propagating plants yet? I'd put a pair of clippers in your glovebox and when it seems right, grab a piece of some pretty stuff that you see out there, and stick it in a baggie with a wet paper towel until you get home. It often speeds up the process of growing stuff, too, when you don't have to worry about germination, etc. Best of luck with your gray water system - I'm working the DH hard for an outdoor shower for the same purpose. I used to use my wash water too, but the washing machine is internal to this house, boo. HTH!

OK, I am guilty of googling after I asked you guys. On the A. longifolia, not much info, but for ammonias in general from the seed database "Amsonia hubrichtii, illustris, orientalis, and tabernaemontana , Sow at Max. 5ºC (41ºF) for 6 weeks, move to 20ºC (68ºF) for germ. in a few days. If no germ. in 3 wks, dig out seeds and give them 8 to 12 hr. soak." From LBJ site on A ciliate, Description: Seed can be sown outside, 1/2 deep, after collection. Seedlings germinate immediately, but flower the second year following germination. For seeds that have been stored, cut an end off the seed and soak in water 2-3 days. This will aid germination. R Seed Collection: Not Available Seed Treatment: Not Available So I have a disagreement in process, but I guess I can try both. I can't find anything on the twist vine except that the leaves small like hot rubber and the sap like really bad body oder. and that butterflies love it but don't plant it in your yard because it is impossible to get rid of. I was think for planting it out in the woods. OOH, it is a good xeric plant found from Arizona to Texas.

Oh right! Theodore Payne sells seeds online and ships. They don't do shipping still for plants right? Just in person I think. And lots of in person educational seminars. Good if you live near Sun Valley in SoCal. :)

Hello Pufftrinket,

It sounds like you are a fan of Michigan's dry sand prairies.

Have you visited the MNA or TNC preserves in Newaygo County ?

You may want to also post on the prairies and meadows forum.

Michigan Wildflower Farm is a local supplier. The Wildflower Association of Michigan's annual conference is a great place to meet people who share your interest.

Martha, I'll email you ASAP. I'd love to see pics, if you have a webpage. I'm happy to plant any and all natives.

Unfortuately, I don't have much dry sandy area. In fact, I have a great deal of soggy riverbank. I'm taking a chance on these, though, becuase the endagered insects that are near my county like them. I'm going to have to broaden to endangered dragonflies and some others for my riverbank, I think!

I'll check out that conference. Sounds like fun.
