Lunaria - White? Money Plant/Honesty

I am so much in love with my purple lunaria (money plant - honesty) that I simply must have white for the new moon garden. Anyone have any seeds? I just posted a seed trade list and might have something cool for you!

I pledge to plant and harvest them and give them away on GW just like the purple ones.

If you grow the white - do they bloom early like the purple? One nice thing about the purple is the early flowers - like a fresh breath of spring.

So far I have gathered for my moon garden:

1. Phlox David

2. Nicotiana

3. Artemsia - a neato glowing version of silvermound

4. 4:00 in white

5. Moon flower (need more seeds for spring)

6. Moon vine

7. Creeping sage (cool purple spikes)

8. Lamb's ears

Any other suggestions? Boy is this fun! I won't have pictures for a while b/c I have to eradicate some old vinca minor from the proposed site. what a pain.

Any of the white lilies, asiatic, trumpet and orental. Nothing like the fragrance wafting in the night! Also nicotianas alata and sylvestris, cleome, white dahlias Eveline is nice with her little lavender edge, or Crazy Love or Angel Dust. White pernnial asters like Monte Casino (I think). IT is covered with a cloud of tiny white stars in September/OCt. For background, azalea, bridalswreath, Mt Everest crab apple, tall white striped grasses. In front, white peonies and lavender alba.

Score! Got my white honesty seeds a while back and the in-ground sown are all up and running. If they're like the purple, they'll overwinter and perhaps bloom. Also, some I threw in a pot are all up and ready to transfer. Should have the same luck with these. I'll harvest a ton of seeds as soon as I can for all who are interested!

Plant the seeds now, I don't know if they will get big enough to bloom next year but sometimes even very small seedllings of money plant will flower come springtime. You can wait until winter or spring and they will sprout fine then, but theres no chance they will bloom that year and they'll just sit there taking up space till next spring. They won't get the variegation until next year but they should seed true as long as there aren't any plain green ones nearby to cross with.

I finally got a plant to bloom this year. I wasn't quite sure what it was - at first it looked like Dame's Rocket which is quite invasive for me. I loved that purple flower! I'm glad I forgot to pull it out because it turned out to be the Money Plant. I have been trying to get this thing to bloom for years. A friend of mine kept giving me seeds off her plant and it finally worked. Do you know anyone with this plant? If so, toss as many of those "dollar coin" seeds in your garden in the fall, and cover lightly with dirt so they don't blow away. That's what finally worked for me.

Hi Jaynine, I guess my question is, what does one mean by "second year"? Here are the plants: Lunaria annua 'Pennies in Bronze' #1. Planted in a spot with some morning sun, probably Spring of last year. It has never grown much, perhaps because of the lack of sunlight or suboptimal water. (the "vine" behind it is a small branch of Calceolaria perfoliata, which should bloom with large yellow pouch flowers. The small plant in the lower right is a white Lapageria seedling). Lunaria annua 'Pennies in Bronze' #2. I just bought this 2 or 3 weeks ago in a 1 gallon pot at a local nursery. It is also an Annie's Annuals plant, that they potted up when it got too big. It's now in a spot that gets midday/afternoon sun. I just picked up Lunaria annua 'Rosemary Verey' at Annie's Annuals for $4.95 (their online prices are higher). In a 4 inch pot: And since I have the photo, a whole bunch of 'Rosemary Verey' at Annie's. Photo taken last April, I think. Now I assume the third photo, of the 4 inch 'Rosemary Verey', was a plant started late last year. The other two I assume are at least 6 months, if not a full year earlier (started the end of 2011 or early 2012). I expect the 'Pennies in Bronze' plants to bloom this year. I'm guessing the 'Rosemary Verey' will not (?). I'm tempted to just put the 'Rosemary Verey' in the ground, and assume they will at least bloom at different times. Or if all bloom this year will the blooming periods still overlap? If so, I'll find another location for it. There's no scale on the 'Pennies in Bronze' photos, but all have a blue Annie's tag that should allow you do somewhat of a comparison. A hybrid between the two with the best qualities of both might not be a bad thing, but for now I'll try to keep them separate.

At my my Nephew 's yard they have this plant(exact the same as in the picture above.) Last year they were collecting the leaves(for decorative use). Actually they are pods with seeds inside. The had almost one pound of seeds that they throw away. The plant is perennial , I think. It is also prolific by way of seeding. I will find out how it taste. BTW: It is simple to make home made mustard; Just ground mustard seeds in your coffee mill and add water/white wine to it to make it to the consistency that you like. I buy white mustard powder from grocery store and make fresh every time that I need it. In Chinese restaurants they serve thin one as deep. Ever since I have discovered this, I will never again buy mustard paste, with so many additives. Now I will try Money plant seeds too.

I'm zone 6 in Tennessee and mine bloom in January. That's the main reason I don't rip them all out. It's the only thing blooming in January.

I have some honesty seeds that was given to me ( i have never seen the plant) when and how do you sow the seeds.
From what I have been reading they come in more than one colour!!

Wow! Has it already been three years? Since then, I have acquired white, purple, and varigated lunaria and they are a staple in my garden. They self-sow like crazy and are biennial. They like part sun and are nice edge of woodland plants.

I would either winter sow or direct sow them. The trick is to remember that they are biennial and not to pull them. The foliage is larger triangular wrinkled leaves. In the early spring they sport phlox or hesperis type flowers that are really beautiful. Then the pods fade to those papery money plants we love. When the paper turns brittle, the seeds come tumbling out.

If you are harvesting seed for trade, I would be sure to really dry the seeds thoroughly for packing as they tend to mold easily. Otherwise, they're fun to send to people.

I grow them in Zone 7 without a problem, other than their reseeding all over. I have them under a Juniper and Cherry tree, almost full shade, and they've done super there, flower great and get plenty of seed pods too.

Hi Bakemom,

I did a search of GW for info on Lunaria and this post came up. I wouldn't have come across it since I have never visited the moon garden forum. I also just love my lunaria. I have only the one type, the purple. I had to rip all mine out last year, but I allowed the seed to scatter and reseed and I have a huge patch of it now and the leaves are huge for some reason. I am looking forward to them next year, but I want to grow something else with them, that bloom at the same time. Since you grow so many of them, can you tell me what might be in bloom at the same time and look good with them?

I recently found out I have seeds to start my own "Money Plant"....Michigan......I have never seen a purple one.....does anyone have photos of these different varities ....I believe mine are the "White" ones.....Thank you in advance....gert
