saving Indian corn seed

Just wondering if I can save my indian corn and replant it next year. Or is it a hybrid like field corn and you need new seed every year. I have earth tone (a rainbow corn) and autumn explosion. They were planted side by side, so I am afraid that if I replant the same seed I will have a mess. So my real question is, should I save my seed or toss it and spend $40 for new seed?

Hi wackybell,
I see that autumn explosion is a hybrid and earth tone is supposed to be an heirloom, which would mean that it is not a hybrid. Either way, corn varieties which mature at the same time crosses readily as a general rule.

You could try a little of the seed and see how it goes but expect that they mixed. Don't bet the farm on an experiment but, then again, isn't "a mess" as you call it, kind of what you expect on an ear of ornamental corn?

Probably a mix, but you will not know till you try it. Usually you will get some that are are the original and some that reverts to the parents. If you grew another kind in the vicinity you will get some crosses also.
