Rubber(ized) Mulch?

Ok, so last week, I was talking to my neighbor to the south and she was telling me that one of our other neighbors had ordered some of this "rubberized mulch".

Hmmm.... I've seen it on TV, but never in person.

Later that day, I'm talking with my neighbor to the North who (unprompted) starts talking about the same stuff. She says she's seen in at her golf course (Bracketts in Lakeville) and that this same neighbor had ordered some.

Ok, so here are my questions, if you have any experience with it:

1. I've read it can destroy landscape plants. True or not?

2. How difficult is it to blow leaves from it in the fall?

3. Does it have an odor?

4. How much was it and where did you get it?

I can only answer one of your questions, and only half of that one! #4. I don't remember seeing the price, but Home Depot carries it. I didn't want to buy it as I felt it wouldn't enrich the soil because it wouldn't decay like the other mulches I've used.

I've heard of using the rubberized mulch beneath swing sets and the like -- makes for a soft place for the kidlets to land -- but, like Chris above, I'd NEVER use a product like that in a garden.

The main purpose of mulch, after all, is to enrich the soil while suppressing weeds. I can't imagine how you'd plant, transplant, or divide anything without working that rubber stuff into the soil.

And if you're bound to have it blend into the soil, what's the advantage of rubber mulch over real, organic mulch? I'd be tempted to chat up that neighbor to see what his/her plan is.

Well that was a crappy crumb rubber product then. Part of the production process is (should be) removing the steel belt material with magnets. Can you imagine a flower bed mulched with sharp pieces of wire sticking out? Or playground? I digress. I'm not going to claim this couldn't happen in an asphalt mix just because I haven't heard of it. I highly doubt crumb rubber mulch can spontaneously combust, and there are plenty of other reasons not to use it that have already been mentioned (i.e. the fact that it never breaks down and has to be removed by hand, and that it smells bad). there's no need to cloud the issue with dire warnings about extremely unlikely dangers.

I wouldn't grow anything to eat there just yet. I despise rubber mulch. Rubber is nothing more than a combination of chemicals. Today we are only scratching the surface at the many man-made things that are health hazards. To me when growing your own food YOU have control over what chemicals are used on your food - I choose to use none. And while you say the rubber has been removed unless there has been some major diggin I am willing to bet you will indeed find pieces for many years to come. Do you have another place (spot) you can garden? Is there a reason you chose this spot? htmlgeek01 you are to be commended for doing a soil test - something many gardeners fail to do. The first thing to consider in site selection is how many hours of "direct sunlight" the location gets. It should be 6-8 hours of unfiltered direct sunlight. If not find another location. Some shade can be helpful to allow time for working in the garden. 2nd would be a reliable soil test - from either a local agriculture dept or college. Begin building the soil the fall (season) before you intend to grow plants. 3rd plant and layout the garden not just in your mind but on paper. This can be a good winter project. Write down things you like to eat and start with those. 4th Do NOT start the garden too big but do build in a way to expand the garden if/when things work out. The reason many people fail at gardening is they jump in "too BIG" - find out it is more work than they can handle and the weeds take over. Many other things to consider but just a few more are Water - is water available? I prefer rainwater but that is another topic entirely. Compost - do you plant to compost? If so try to build in room in or near the garden. Building a compost bins or simply using a ring made from wire fencing will be another project (maybe over winter). Winter is a good time for garden planning. Read up on winter sowing - something to help pass the winter days. Oh and this should prob be # 1.5 keep a garden notebook. Write in things as you think of them and review the notes in spring BEFORE planting. Write in things that went well and things that need to be improved on (each year). To me gardening is on huge experiment - making mistakes is part of the learning curve - but making them repeatedly is just silly. HTH Best of health and luck to you.

Nope. Pups will chew on and swallow almost anything. If you need something to cover a really dead space most frequently used -- such as where they like to sun themselves or lie in the shade -- you might consider creating a puppy patio with paving stones in that space and/or some clean bagged sandbox sand. Small gravel and sand would be preferable to mulch. A rubber "welcome" mat for each of them would be preferable to chopped rubber mulch.

I would suggest you consider hardwood bark or mushroom compost. There's is also a softwood bark which I wouldn't recommend as the color fades away in a couple months. The advantage of bark over wood chips is that termites won't be in the bark like in wood chips. However it's my opinion that the sawdust from the saw mill may be in it. There is two grades; single and double-shred mulch the double being finer. The mushroom compost was used to grow two batches of mushrooms but not only serves as a mulch but also as an excellent fertilizer. You can get either delivered. It's sold by the cubic yard and is normally delivered or you can pick it up in your or a rental pickup. But some sellers will allow you to fill your own bags, but I wouldn't go there while they're busy. A cubic yard will cover 162 sq ft two inches deep.

I have seen this used in the south for years. As stated; under swing sets, in parks, etc. I was pretty impressed by the thought of using up old tires for this. But as for in a garden I wouldnt do it. I put some in an area that our dogs have decided to claim for their personnel use. It is along side an ugly chain link fence and the mulch works very well. At first it did have a rubber smell but that is gone. And the dogs havent seemed to be bothered by it at all-not growing a 5th leg or second head. And when they "scratch" it doesnt seem to fly as much as the regular mulch. So I guess it has its purpose, just not for gardens.

I looked at some rubber mulch from Menard's. It was tire chunks with a brown paint type of covering. For my application--on top of black plastic--it would have worked OK except the color was flaking off, so it didn't look very good; I ended up with the red lava chips.

rubber tires are full of synthetic polymers and heavy metals, that do break down (over decades). The known culprits are arsenic, lead and especially zinc (which in elevated levels will kill plant roots quickly and then inhibit root growth in anything you plant in that soil).

Rubber mulch does stink, but only in intense heat.

It sounds commendable to reuse rubber mulch on playgrounds BUT since i'd not let my kids play in a tire dump, touch tires and getting their knees, hands, faces dirty with the soot and grime, I sure as hell wouldn't want my kids falling in it on a playground.

Regular mulch (that isn't dyed or from treated lumber remnants) is much safer. Even tho it breaks down you know you're not contributing to dumping non-degradable crap all over the soil. That or good old grass and dirt.

They ever have the audacity to use rubber tire chips in wetland resorations (to increase soil aeration), which totally seem inappropriate as you are infusing shards of junk into soils that would be impossible to remove outside of digging out topsoils later on.

The issue has resurfaced on the Soil, Compost and Mulch forum, thanks to the previous poster. A lot of wildly divergent views for those interested. Gary

The EPA has done minimal testing.
