Yellow lady's slippers

I have a dilema, a farmer neighbor of mine has a couple clumps of Yellow Lady's slippers growing on the side of a field access road. Years ago I spotted them, and every once in a while will go cut a couple to put in a vase. He contacted me the other day. He needs to tear out the access road, apparantly he is moving it to another location, that is better for him or something like that. And he said if I want to dig the Lady's slippers I could, but I need to do it within the next 2 weeks.

These are currently growing in full sun, on the side of the road, and is pretty dry. And they are blooming right now.

I would love to transplant these into my yard, I do have a bed that has similar conditions. Although with out the grass! Does anyone have any suggestions that would make the transition go as well as possible?

Try to take a really big chunk of soil with the clump when you dig it, and if possible try to move them on an overcast day. Good luck!

Exactly what hostaholic said. I brought mine in to my daughter's classroom for all to see. I dug a big ball so as not to disturb the root ball.

If the soil is really dry I'd water the plant a little so the dirt doesn't crumble but not so much that it's mud.

Dear TWC, I've got Wake Robin Trillium - Trillium erectum. Let me know if you'd like some. I'm looking for myself for Celadine Poppy, and any of the native sedges like carex bicknelli, greyii, stricta etc. Can be any type of native sedge, just some examples. If not, maybe a trade for some bloodroot, that's really hard to come by.

Another route to seeds is to join a good horticultural society with a seed exchange. For example, I've seen yellow lady slipper seed offered in the Ontario Rock Garden Society annual seed exchange (you don't have to be an Ontario resident to join, either - there are members living in Norway!). I don't know what societies you might have in Alberta but I'm sure there is a chapter of the Rock Garden Society there, and believe me they don't limit their seeds to just rock garden plants! Or botanical gardens sometimes sell seed or plants - have you checked out the Devonian Gardens website?

thanx Sharon! No I don't go for the whole taking a drive in the country with your spade thing... I've wanted an Alberta Wild Rose bush for years, and it's taken me 2 years of trying to germinate seeds but I've got 5 seedlings planted out already and 3 more in containers! I'm checking out those 2 websites, and I'll run upstairs and grab my credit card to order!!!

Would it be a good idea to cut the flowers off, like I do with other perennials? What! am I asking! Of course it's a good idea! Sometimes I tend to overthink stuff.
