The title says it all. Can anybody direct me to a list of deer resistant flowers w/ pictures?

I went to google images and typed in "deer resistant flowers" and found these. I'm sure there are others.

Warning--I have ordered from this source and been very disappointed. VERY, very small amounts in the packets, and very low germination rate, well below what you would get from a larger commercial source.

Also, Mocknbird, you should accept the fact that deer will eat absolutely anything if hungry enough. Also, be aware that deer in different areas will eat different plants. There is no such thing as a "deerproof" plant. I have been gardening with deer here for about 10 years.

Here are a few that have been untouched in my garden:

Dicentra (Bleeding Heart)
Iris
Chrysanthemums
Daisy (Chrisanthemum spps.)
Hyssop
Nepeta (Catmint)
Flax
Mock Orange (Philadelphus spp)
Daffodils
Oenothera (evening primrose)
Black-eyed susan (rudbeckia spp.)
Butterfly bush
Lavender of any kind
Russian Sage (periskova)
most ornamental grasses
SOME (but not all) hardy geranium
Stachys
most ferns

Most herbs are safe. Instead of annuals, I often fill in with annual herbs--thai basil is particularly attractive, so is basil "purple ruffles". One ferny herb that's good is Stevia, but there are no flowers to speak of.

Had woodchucks this year, they went after mostly the asters and echincea and the clover in the lawn. They didn't eat any perovskia that was right next to the echinacea. The Shastas were not blooming but they didn't eat the foliage. Walked right by them on their way to the echinacea. I also winter sowed three varieties of Shastas this year. The Alaska I sowed last year bloomed this year and it was horrible. Way too tall for where I planted it, flopped all over everything with the first rain and never came up again, buds opened all eaten by something. This year, I had Becky, Crazy Daisy and Snowcap seed and winter sowed those. They all germinated fine and the planted out seedlings look great. Some are short which is what I was looking for, and others a little taller. Some have buds on them and I am waiting to see what they look like. I also bought Shasta Wirral's Pride from Bluestone this year during their sale and it is blooming and has gorgeous crested blossoms that are long lasting and on thick stems. I am growing them in full sun.

Clay loving AND Deer Resistant? Help!

My butterfly weed (asclepias) did pretty good in a compact clay spot I hadn't amended. So did my pincushion flower (scabiosa), though I've never seen that attract that many butterflies. Most everything else I've ever had does so much better with amendments. If you mulch it every year, and turn the mulch under as deep as is easy with a shovel in the spots where you don't have plants in the fall, it will take 3 years to notice a difference but it will help your soil a lot without too much effort. (I say in fall because then you won't disturb your perennials because you'll still know where they are.) So if you plan to stay where you are that long it will be worth it eventually.

I don't know of anything exactly cosmos like, but there are all kinds of Daisies if that is close enough. Chrysanthemums that look like daisies, golden marguerite (anthemis), Coreopsis that look like daisies.... Although, Cosmos are on the same deer resistant lists as these, so if your deer are hungry enough to eat cosmos, these may get nibbled too.

The getting the job and supporting me would be great! LOL! Regarding the yard, there is some beautiful landscaping there, old hemlocks and pines, flowering trees, birches, etc. I'm quite happy with it and don't see any place to add anything. Closer to the house there were some bushes that I kept cutting back multiple times in a season, and they still grew taller than the windows. I'm looking for something evergreen scaled down in size that could add some interest during the winter, and I'll have some flowering shrubs for the summer as well. Thanks!!

Check out the USFWS Chesapeake Bay Field Office's publication "Native Plants for Wildlife Habitat and Conservation Landscaping." http://www.fws.gov/chesapeakebay/BayScapes/bsresources/bs-nativeguides.htm

It has a section on native deer-resistant plants. It also shows pictures, habit, habitat, native physio-geographic region (DC is on the border of Piedmont and Coastal Plain), sun/shade tolerance, soil types, etc. of all the native plants listed.
