dividing/transplanting in zone 7 in the fall:

I've heard it's recommended to divide hostas in the fall (although i did it in the spring, hehe... they survived).

What part of fall is best- early? Late? September, november? I have no idea.

I also have a huge clump of some ornamental grass (also transplanted a small bit off it in the spring which also survived). I was wondering when the best time to transplant this would be? It's right outside a window in my kitchen, and it's nice and all, but it's literally in the middle of a patio (on purpose!!) and it doesn't NEED to be right there. It's kinda overbearing.

i think spring would be the best time to transplant the ornamental grass, after i've cut it back, and the new starts growing and is only a few inches tall. but maybe you are supposed to do this in the fall too?

thoughts?

THanks! :)
