For those of you who use the stainless plant markers

I bought 100 of the stainless plant markers about 2-3 years ago. The nice heavy ones http://www.kincaidgardens.com/content.cgi and a label maker with clear tape. When a few plants died that had been marked I retrieved the stakes to make new labels for new plants but alas, dynamite couldn't couldn't remove the labels. Not Goo, not scraping with a knife, not adhesive remover. Anyone have a solution to this problem?

Cindy, have you contacted the folks at Kincaid garden markers? They would likely have the solution to that issue. Please let us know what they suggest, as I'm sure many have those exact garden markers. As luck would have it, I JUST bought my first batch.

what label maker???

i have removed brothers ptouch clear labels with a heat gun.... or left on asphalt on a hundred degree day ... and probably a hair dryer ... but i never tried that ..

what it did... was make the label rubbery enough that i could lift a corner with a razor blade ... careful not to scratch the surface... and then peel it off with needlenose pliers ... do i need to tell you to be careful.. they will be hot ...

after that.. and they cooled down.. goo be gone.. or some such.. removed the adhesive ... but they had cooled completely by then.. i didnt try vaporizing and breathing whatever was in the goo ...

the point is... is that the clear label is not allowing the adhesive remover to get to the adhesive... so get rid of the label ...

do not try to scrape them off cold steel with a safety razorblade .... you will scratch the heck out of the stainless ... been there.. done that .... but only once ...

seems that the clear labels harden over long periods in the sun ...

if you turn the label bubbly... you probably heated it too much ... [now that i think about it.. that might have been my first try with a blowtorch... lol]

The best way to make a marker with the mini blinds is to use Aluminum Foil Tape available in the plumbing section of your hardware store. A large roll goes for about five dollars and will make hundreds of markers. The tape is similar to your kitchen tin wrap. It has a very good adhesive backing that sticks wonderfully to the mini blinds. Just cut off a piece and stick it to your blind. You can write on it with anything, it doesn't matter. When you write on it, it simply makes an indent in the foil. Never fades, never smudges. I can reuse all of my markers that were out all winter, the moisture doesn't affect the sticky backing!

Berndoodle, The deer don't seem too spooked because they will walk right by us just 100 feet or so away and act like we aren't even there. Our dogs will chase them and they stare them down and make our dogs run the other direction. Its really funny to watch. I think they have learned no one in our area is going to hurt them so they stayed huddled in about a twenty five acre area. I just hope the fence works. Hi Lavender lass. I think if I don't spray the Liquid Fence at least every 2-3 weeks they start to munch away. They can really eat up a bunch of my roses in no time flat. They do seem to come around at any time day or night. Not sure if they do attack them at night or if I just don't get outside in the morning until after they have already eaten them. They also eat my phlox and my lilies. I really don't think they should be starving because there is plenty of other green vegetation for them to munch on. I tell you what, they LOOOOOVE Disneyland. I moved it and they walked right past about 15 other roses and munched away on my Disneyland. I have alot of roses planted on the side of my house where the most sun is and its also where a patch of woods are so they have a daily routine and walk through there each morning and head back each evening. I somehow need to distract them from their routine. I have found when they munch after spraying with Liquid Fence they seem to spit it out. So I know the stuff works but I get lazy and don't spray it all the time. I guess I will try some of the fence techniques and see how it does. Thanks a bunch, Judy

Anyone who would prefer to go and get your garden markers instead of mail ordering them, might want to look at a place called Argyle Acres---if you are anywhere near the north of Dallas area. Actually they seem to do mail-order only all year except for their open house starting April 11. They are an iris farm, not a rose source. I have only just found their website, but I intend to go to their open house next month and carry away some markers. I'm also VERY happy to find an iris farm closer to me than Arkansas. Scott, If you only had 1 or 200 conifers it doesn't matter. The point is to find the best plant marker out there that happens to be trouble free and will still be there long after the plant dies. That has happened to me numerous times. I then pull it up stick a new name on it and away we go. We all have different opinions. You need to decide what works best for you. I think you have enough to go on. I am sure Ken only has your best interests in mind. Opinionated for sure, but aside from that a good resource for valuable information. By the way I am opinionated also. "So since bunky only has 45-50 conifers" If you have that many then putting the correct name on a marker is a must. A conifer collector you have become. Most people that would take time to look at 50 different conifers have more then a occasional interest. Having a name on them will relieve you of the embarrassment of not knowing what you are growing. I still on occasion have to look at the tag to give correct information to the person that is interested. No big deal...who could remember all those Latin pronunciations any way. "I kind of get the feeling I'm not good enough to talk with the elites, but nobody here normally talks down to me in this way." There are a few elites on this forum and rightly so. Its easily to separate the ones that are in the know from those that think they are. I have been helped numerous times by those in the know. Straighten those feathers back up and keep on posting. i dont know why the steel marker would have any clue how to remove a label they did not sell ...

Well, since the outdoor labels are paired with the steel markers so much so that the Kincaid folks actually sell the PTouch Label Maker PLUS the labels, figured they'd be knowledgeable on the matter of removing the labels from their markers.

I would guess that boiling water would make the label soft, take care that you are handling metal that is cooling from boiling temp. You could probably leave the legs on and dip in long enough till adhesive softens.......off to try a test....and back....boiled a pot of water and put them in at near boiling (193 degrees) for a minute....not too hot to handle and started an edge with my fingernail and peeled off virtually clean. May take longer if mine wasn't as affixed as yours.

Yes, it is a P-Touch. I didn't realize Kincaid sold them as I bought mine rebuilt off ebay. I will try the heat method and if that doesn't work, I will try contacting Kincaid. Thanks, folks! I will report back.

Kinkaid sells replacement plates for a reasonable price so I would just get those if I couldn't get the labels off.

Cindy, hope this is okay to add to your discussion.

Kincaid is offering a new modified version with a narrower post that is more competitive with zinc marker prices. 100 'A' style 10" are 68-69 cents each vs older ones ('P' style) with heavier posts are about 94 cents each for a hundred delivered to my address. They also added a style with label angled up and back from the posts similar to the zinc style....ones I use angle down and forward.

Just passing along for your info, I have no connection to Kincaid, I just like their product.

Paul, I bought 100 of the 12" "M" style at a little more than $1 each. But thank you all for the heat idea. I used a candle lighter to the back of the plate until the plate got really warm, almost hot and the label peeled right off. This label had been on for 2 years so glad to have a solution. Paul, I think you were the one who pointed me to Kincaid. Their stainless labels are the best! Very heavy gauge.
