When do gladiolas bloom?

I planted gladiola bulbs in the spring and have some lovely green stalks, but that's it. Shouldn't I be seeing flowers by now?

Bloom time depends on many factors. Gladiolus blooming dates are from VE (very early) 65-70 days to VL (very Late) 120 days. However the average bloomtime is around 82 to 87 days.
Large bulbs, 2inches in diameter bloom earlier than bulbs 1 in in diameter. How deep did you plant? Bulbs planted 6 in deep will take longer to bloom than bulbs planted 4 in deep. Are they in full sun? Do they get water as needed. I'll bet I've told you a lot more than you wanted to know. Steve in Baltimore County

Thanks, Steve. I don't remember when I planted them. They were small bulbs that I bought on a whim, one of those cheap bags of bulbs from Lowes. Don't remember how deep I dug the hole. They are getting probably close to 5 hours of morning sunlight a day and plenty of water. It just seems that by now I should be seeing the stems coming up that hold the flowers and instead all I have are leaves. I will just keep waiting . . .

Thanks Susan :-) I love it when I get comments like yours..Until 3 months ago I have never done anything in our garden, mostly because I was away at school, but once I started it and got back results, I couldn't stop. Its so satisfying to see these plants grow and bloom..LOL you know I may have been surrounded by beautiful plants but I never noticed before. Besides the tropicals, alot of flowering plants don't make it thru the summer heat...We live on Grand Bahama island, much more quiet but pleasant compared to Nassau, where you visited. I have only been to Nassau for a few brief visits... I will be more than happy to post more pics when I get something new to show ;-) if its related to this forum.. Happy Gardening!

Called cormlets. You can plant them just as you would seeds, but they'll bloom sooner than would seedlings.

You must have a different verity... This is my first year and mine are about 2 feet tall or so and each plant is about 18 inches wide... My flowers aren't nearly that big, maybe about 3-1/2 to 4 inches long and only about 2 inches wide and to me they don't seem to open all the way... I do have some a lot smaller though... Only planted one pot of them because I didn't know what to expect... Well I planted another one last week ( they're already sprouting ) to see if they're a different color, the seeds are a light brown instead of black like the other ones... To tell the truth I'm still not sure that what I have is a true moon flower... The seeds pods I got this spring look like Datura pods only mine were egg shaped not round... ( God I wish I had a camera. ) And I didn't have to soak or nick the seeds, just tossed them in the planter, smoothed the dirt over them and watered.. Oh, mine are a light lilac with light purple throats... Although I think the first one was white with a light purple throat... I let that one develop a seed pod and haven't had any other flowers on that one... Rita

Oh my goodness, I walked outside today and noticed that two of the gladiola stems had flowers on them, and a third has buds! And they are a beautiful violet color!

I so enjoy the surprises of gardening!
