Have This Year's Iris Bloomed In Maryland?

I moved into a new house last fall and am going through my first year of identifying the plants in the yard. I was gone all through the month of May, and one week of June, so I missed seeing what bloomed then.

I have what I think are iris growing in part of the yard - but now I'm not so sure.

Since I want to move the iris away where they are at, I started digging them up, and they just seem to be green stems with roots. I haven't rinsed the soil off the roots, but I don't see obvious rhizomes sticking out from in there - just green stems attached to roots.

Is there a chance they aren't iris? Could they be an ornamental grass?

The green stems are growing in the shape of a circle (not a ball) with nothing in the middle. Is that normal?

I think there is a leftover stem of a dead bloom on a couple of these plants.

How do iris do in shade?

My irises are new-ish plants, given to me by family and my husband's boss last fall. I planted them quickly so they would bloom this year. Only one did, but the others are healthy with nice foliage. My one iris to bloom budded at the end of April and opened at the beginning of May. I noticed irises around town blooming around the same time. My irises are growing in full sun, but I know that my mother's iris (in Indiana) grow in partial sun, under her lilac bushes.

I have Iris's in two different places in my yard and neither one bloommed this year. I have no reason as to why.

Hi seil - I went to college in Indiana, and my family is from the northeast, so I suspect we are a bit ahead of some folks re blooming. I've heard, thanks to the warning climate, that our former zone 6 planting is now a 7. But it's not so great, for one thing, spider mite populations and other insects are not getting killed off in winter. I was just thinking I should do some flower pictures, especially since roses like my New Year are older and not easy to come across - will work on it!!

Thanks ngraham! This particular clump is out in the middle of the gravel far away from my other Iris, so no invasion. They must have mistakenly included a different variety of Iris in the bag that I bought (that's walmart for you!) and I guess the more yellow iris didn't bloom last year. Although funny thing I haven't gotten any of the pinkish blooms yet like I had last year! Weird!

I'm much more patient, but I have space to give to slackers, if I like them. Right now 75% of my iris have bloomed. Many of the remaining have buds. Of those that did not bloom, 8 I got 2 years or more ago with no blooms yet :( , but some of those were tiny when I got them from the same trade & didn't expect bloom for a while, although I really did this year. Another 6 or so I just got last year-but some of those are lates & may still bloom. I divided several clumps last year, 3 of those did not bloom-some of the rhizomes were big enough to bloom, but didn't. I'm surprised, but that happens. I do have 2 iris that just don't seem to multiply well & only grow big enough to bloom every other year. This was their year. Batik is an odd one-I got it several years ago, took 3 years to bloom the first time. It bloomed 3 years in a row, then I divided it, didn't bloom 2 years & I moved it again & it still hasn't bloomed. I think once it is settled it will bloom every year. Maybe.

85% of my irises did not bloom this year, tho they bloomed their heads off last year. They are REALLY growing leaves tho, now I need to enlarge their bed because they have crowded it so. Now its really dry here (all the rain goes east toward the hot air in DC), but they are growng up a storm. Did had 3 white re-bloomers; 2 the Immortality (on bulbs that did not bloom this spriing) and another one [white, ruffled, white beards & pale violet interiors]. Always something new to put down on my flower bed graph.

My iris bloomed a while back. The ones that end up shaded don't bloom well for me so I move them to a sunnier spot. What didn't bloom were my lilacs and I noticed that none of my akebias bloomed either (3 different varieties). I've heard from a number of people about their lilacs not blooming and noticed that there were none (or very few) in any yards in Mont. or Howard counties this spring.

Could what you have be candy lily or blackberry lily? Neither have the tuber that iris have and do better in more shade than iris does. They also have similar foliage. My blackberry lily has not bloomed yet this year. My irises bloomed back in May.
