Comments (2)Ditto what Karl said, but next Fall, loosely wrap some chicken wire around the base of the rose so the little monsters can't get to it...it doesn't need to be permanent, just there for the winter. You can re-use it every fall, I do this for some of my shrubs that are a deer delicasy..Donna...See MoreRabbit damages on conifers
Comments (11)Three years ago we had deep snow for the month of February. I had my back yard fenced in with chain link. The ground was uneven at the bottom of the fence line and rabbits could squeeze there way under. Since there was nothing to eat they came in under the fence and destroyed 12 of my dwarf conifers and several Ginkgos. I purchased rolls of fine mesh galvanized wire two ft. high and began to wrap my fence. I cut the bottom to fit the ground contour so it fit snug against it. Took about a week kneeling on the frozen snow tying it to the chain link. with fine galvanized tie wire. That completely shut them out of my garden forever. I see plenty of tracks on the other side of the fence where they ,rabbits, try to defeat it. A lot of work but worth it. For a lot of you this is not possible but my garden is small which permitted me a way to solve my rabbit issues. You can barely see the wire mesh in this photo starting at the bottom of the fence line up to two ft. Dave...See MoreInsect Damage Prevention/Control
Comments (2)Definitely best to do regular maintenance. Of course, keep in mind the above advice is for all, including those that garden outside. Indoors has advantages and disadvantages. It's easy to accidentally bring in bugs from the outside. The problem with indoor gardening and bugs is that there are not as many natural predators (spiders always seem to find a way, though) killing off the bugs you accidentally and unknowingly bring in. Hence the need for that regular maintenance. Without natural checks in place, bugs can breed pretty darn fast. Fortunately, they are usually pretty easy to spot - or at least the clues are. With proper care, you certainly reduce the risk of infestation, but it is very easy to miss something and most people don't shower and change their clothes before entering a grow area unless their business depends on it. Spider mites are one of the major problems indoors. You can use neem on those, too. Mike, are you for real or is this a spam log on? Just curious since the name is so new and the link is not to anything pertaining to the thread. Hate to accuse someone of spamming if they are just linking to a site they find helpful, but man this forum gets a lot spam....See MoreRabbit damage
Comments (10)I don't know your state laws but here in Kentucky its legal to kill any animal if it is damaging your property. We have rabbits thick here and fortunately my yard is crappy and full of clover... so they avoid my hostas. You could plant a patch of white clover in hopes they chose that instead of your hostas. Or you could buy live traps and bait them with lettuce..then either have fried rabbit and biscuits and gravy for dinner or take them off down the road somewhere lol... The cages work to protect your hosta, and so does the light fencing...but I they wouldn't be my ideal control device =) John...See Moreseedsilly
