I have a terrible time trying to grow stuff from seed. I need plants!

Even with a light and a fan on them for 12 hours a day my tomato seedlings are leggy as all get out!

Hi, I recently joined Garden Web, although years ago I joined in the gardening section. But, went back to work, long hours, long travel and just to many hours away from home to enjoy the beauty around us. I recently became unemployed due to General Motors (worked for a company associated with GM) and my husband has moved to MI to continue working for GM. Now I am back and forth between MI and TN since we are not giving up our home here that we plan on retiring at. So this year has been a struggle on knowing which direction to follow. I have extra time on my hands and I find recycling junk very interesting. I live in southwest TN and love it here. Although the weather has been far too hot to enjoy. I know it has been like this everywhere. So now that the weather is cooling off I should have more time outside to start and finish things I am in the middle of, due to getting involved with junk. :) I googled glass totems and found this site. My mother n law had made a couple and I fell in love. I have since made some and really got into making plate flowers. I also have copied many of the things posted here and hope to try them all in time. I plan on selling some garden junk items at the yearly OctoberFest in my local area next month. Just getting started and not really wanting to get rid of anything I have made yet. So not sure what all I will be selling. My birthday is coming up soon and I will be 57. Too young to retire and too old to look for another job. I want to be able to travel back and forth to MI to see my hubby so I need something flexible. So I am thinking of getting into re-purposing junk. Hubby will be home for the weekend and I might go to MI next week. I haven't been able to show him the mess I made of the barn with all of our junk we had and the stuff I have been buying at TS,GW and antique places. I have an area to work once it isn't 100 degrees and love it. I would love to go see Shabby Joes display at an art fair in Marshall, MI not far from my hubby. Well, this is it for me. Acountryfarm--I love the pictures I saw on another thread of your beadboard. I absolutely LOVE your chair rail--it is exactly what our old house needs--not the super-skinny, rounded kind they have at Lowe's. Did you ever find out what the name of it is? We don't have a lot of choices in lumberyards here in Albany, NY--we have Curtis Lumber and Stock Building Supplies...I can't even think of any others off the top of my head. Lowe's had a decent selection of neat historic chair rails--but I couldn't figure out how to make them work with the beadboard. How did you just "set" it on top of the beadboard? I guess I'm confused (I've never done this before, so I'm having a hard time envisioning it.) Did the top of the beadboard have to be EXACTLY flat that way? Or did the chair rail overlap a little? I guess that's where I don't get it--many have said you have to router out the chair rail if you don't pick the ubiquitous "wainscoting cap" (that I'm trying to avoid). Thanks for your help!! Sarah

I will try my best in relationship with friends - ignore lots of stuff because I am aware that there has to be give and take in friendship. I ignore too much, stuff it down and let it go. But - in time (usually many years) there will be a (small) straw that breaks the camels back and I am done forevermore. I don't want to discuss it, I am completely done with a person. I never miss the relationship, I'm that done. It's like when I decide I don't want to interact to the person again, a huge burden has been lifted from my shoulders. It's not that I never speak to them, but I am so distant and unavailable to them that they clearly get the message. I never miss the "good times" of the friendship, I feel worn out from the effort and the "good times" (of which there will be many) are simply of no value anymore. I consider it a terrible fault within myself that I can so suddenly, quietly and finally walk away from a friendship and not be willing to even discuss the reason for it's demise. It's a cruelty I despise within myself. Usually, it's petty stuff that build over the years that finally does me in-one unimportant thing will suddenly and unexpectedly be "the" one that is my last straw. I am aware this is fault is of my own making because I'm so unwilling to discuss the things that bother me as they are happening. I tend to ignore a great many small things that snowball into a place where it's just too late. It's a terrible failing. I don't know if trying to talk something out would do any good (I feel petty if I try) but it really would be far better if I had made the effort along the way, before I was so completely done. This has happened a handful of times in my adult life with friendships that were five years or even decades old - this really bothers me about myself. I understand the petering out of a more casual friendship - this happens all the time in life, this is not that. It's a sudden death of my own making. The common factor is that I always end up feeling that I was upholding the "work" part of the friendship rather than it being a two way street, and then I quit my job. I have no idea if I'm correct in this perception as I simply won't allow any discussion about it once it's a done deal for me. A terrible flaw in my make up. I wonder if this flaw is in any of you - I often feel so alone with this issue.

Everyone gave themselves great gifts!!!! I broke down and progressed to a Smart phone. We've always had a flip phone as we use a cell so seldom, it was all we needed. Bought it when there was a No Tax day, so saved 13% right off the bat. Trouble is, I'm intimidated as heck by it!! When I get a new laptop I can't wait to fire it up and get going, but this cell phone? I don't know what the heck I'm doing, so it's just sitting there. I need to find someone who'll walk me through it. It's an Android and one of the things I did was register my Gmail address. Mistake. I never ever use it, it's just an email address to register at websites. And of course, you can't sign out of it, because Google is Android. Grrrr. That's one major thing that upsets me. So the phone is just sitting on the table as a paperweight. Hubby and I were out shopping and a scarf caught my eye and he bought it. I also saw some earrings on Kijiji (new) and sent him the link. He got the hint LOL

When I was a kid, my mom had somewhere around 1/2 to 2/3s of an acre of vegeatable garden.. When it was time to plant potatoes, my dad would take the little tractor and three bottom plow ahead of us, and Mom and my sisters and I would follow belong placing potato eyes in the furrow. Next time through he'd cover them up. We didn't plant them early and we didn't plant them on Good Friday... we planted them whenever Dad was caught up with the field work. We harvested them pretty much the same way. Bet nobody here knew that :-)

Every Memorial weekend, which is roughly when my 80+ year old grandma's birthday is, my husband (and often son) and I head to Maple Lake in the morning and spend all day planting with my grandma. We fill all her Earth Boxes with starts I do for her, harvest strawberries, weed, plant begonias, and fill the rest of her gardens with flowers and herbs. That, and a pint jar of our home-processed silver maple syrup are her birthday gifts.

I started gardening 3 years ago. We bought a home in Richfield that has a double lot. At the time we liked the house, but thought that the yard would be too big to mow. We basicly bought the house in spite of the large lot.

Within a short time I started to plant a few things in the window boxes, before I knew it I was on my knees in the yard throwing annuals into the ground. By the end of the summer I learned what perennials are and bought a few on clearance at a nursery. By the following spring I became addicted to gardening and have 3 major gardens with several smaller ones in various locations. Now our big back yard is the best thing that happened to us. I can't wait to fill it as each year goes by. Thank goodness we didn't buy any of the downtown condos that we originally looked at. I'd be lost without all that dirt under my nails.

My mom is an avid gardener, and getting me to help when I was younger was like pulling teeth!! When dh and I first moved into our house, there was a huge clump of tiger lilies at the front steps, and we thought they were ugly, so we dug them up and threw them out. I just didn't like gardening. Now, I'd give anything to have them back, and I've overtaken the whole yard with my gardens in the past year.
