My wisteria doesn't bloom

My wisteria is about 5-6 years old,, Vines everywhere but it hasn't bloomed..

What can I put in the soil....?

Is it Aunt Dee or Blue Moon? They are hardy, most others are not. If it is a hardy variety, I'd try root pruning to 'shock' into changing its ways. Also it should be in full sun for good bloom.

I have 3 wisteria that have done well for me. Wisteria macrostachys 'Aunt Dee' which took 8 years to bloom. Wisteria macrostachya 'Blue Moon' which is on it's 7th year with no blooms....I hope this summer is the magical summer. ha ha

I also have Wisteria floribunda 'Macrobotrys' which I don't think will ever bloom for me. I have to really mulch this one and cover with bags full of leaves. It grows beautifully but does not seem hardy enough to thrive.

Good luck getting yours to bloom. Sun and fertilizer seemed to assist my Aunt Dee into bloom. Hopefully, it will help my Blue Moon this summer ha ha.

I moved into a house about 10 yrs ago and there was a huge lilac bush in the front yard, but VERY over grown with branches that hung out every where. I didn't want to cut the bush down because I love lilac but I needed to really trim it. I only cut off branches that looked dead or totally dry nothing that was green and only from the sides nothing from the top so I thought it would be ok (I am no where near a gardening expert) but for the past few years it has gotten less and less bloom. Is it totally gone or do I just need to wait it out. It hasn't gotten a really good bloom in the past 6-7 yrs. I'm wondering if I should just give up but I keep thinking next year it will be better. Any suggestions??

My Bower doesn't bloom

I bought my Bower Vine at Easter, 2003, and planted it by the fig -- thought it would look neat climbing up the tree. It had modest growth, some flowering, and was frost damaged that winter. In 2004 I replanted it along the South wall, and it did much better. This year it's outgrown the fan trellis, bloomed constantly since early spring, but has slowed somewhat this past week to a few flower clusters. Plenty of new buds, though, so I'm not worried. I've had to add two more trellises, one on either side; it also made friends with the Bottle Tree, so I'm letting it climb up a branch. It's mulched with cedar chips, watered deeply once a week, and gets a gallon of Peter's 20-20-20 water once a month. One of my few successes, so I love it. Zill

I would think the problem is not enough sun. It could also be a nutrient imbalance. Too much nitrogen relative to phosphorus and potassium can cause lots of green growth without much flowering. Pruning should not be an issue since they bloom on new wood. I cut mine down to about a foot tall in the spring. You can wait to prune until you see new growth to determine how far the die-back was in winter. Leaving it up in winter protects the plant somewhat and provides winter interest too. For me the store-bought butterfly bushes always performed poorly. They usually only lasted a year or two and never got any size to them. Then I wintersowed some seed I got in a swap and have had the resulting plants for almost 5 years now. The one in full sun shoots up to almost 7' tall every summer after cutting back to 12" in spring. It is loaded with blooms that I deadhead to keep it blooming until a hard frost. I have never fertilized it, but we do have a more clay based soil that retains nutrients. I think some of the more cultivated varieties and hybrids have probably sacrificed hardiness and vigorousness for the sake of compact size and new colored blooms.

Night blooming jasmine loves the sun. If you bought the plant from a store that kept it indoors, that means after a certain time the plant grew soft leaves according to the indoor climate. Now that you have it and you want to have in your garden, just put it there. It's going to loose all those soft leaves and grow new ones according to outdoor climate. Don't be scared, all the leaves are going to dry up and die, but it's going to grow new ones according to the "too much sun, wind, rain", stronger and shorter in size. The only thing that the night blooming jasmine doesn't take is too much cold or snow. Eventually it's going to die. If you live somewhere where it never snows or if the temperature never goes bellow 40 degrees F, you're OK. Otherwise you have to take it indoors winter time. Good luck

I don't have either AD or BM. My wisteria did bloom 3 times the first year I had it, and almost every year since it has bloomed at least twice.

With wisteria, fertilizer (esp. a high nitrogen one) will promote green growth, not so much bloom. Wisteria actually do better in less-than-perfect soil.

Appropriate pruning of the vines can encourage bloom (google to find this, I know there's a decent site but don't recall it's name/address).

The best technique though is to root prune. The site I mentioned above talks about this also, with handy-helpful diagrams.

Oh, and full sun is quite important, too. Full sun and then more sun, really! lol

Just ran across this on my calendar. It's from the site I mentioned:

To encourage flowering shoots, cut the newest side shoots back about 6 inches from the main branch in midsummer.

In winter, prune the regrowth back to about three nodes (leaves) from their main branch. This will help encourage the growth of flowering shoots in spring.
