another hvx question

I planted a regal splendor and a krossa regal last fall. Both of them are showing markings and I wanted help in identifying if this is the dreaded hvx. These were both from a box store last fall. The regal splendor gets sun from 9-2 and gets watered by drip every day.

Looks like the wax is melting off...and some chlorosis (nutrient problem). I don't see anything to worry about.

I think it looks like a nutritional issue or a matter of settling in!
But--I'm not an expert, just parroting explanations I've seen on here before!

If it were HVX, I'd expect to see ink blot patterns, where the dark green 'bleeds' out from the
veins and are highly irregular and obviously 'just not right' for any hosta to have!

I agree with hippie. This is normal color change for the hosta undulata. Some do it; some don't. Undulata Albomarginata has a white edge with a green center - "albo"=white - "marginata"=edges or margins. The photos appear to be just plain undulata.

Think the damage on Komodo Dragon is weather realated not HVX. As far as HVX being transmitted from a plant in a joint bed, if someone is digging in the bed, and cuts the roots of a diseased and healthy plant, the disease can be transmitted, or by somebody weed-whacking, or cutting scapes etc. It does not spread just by touching, it is by sap that the disease is passed on.

the 'buyer' first.. should be a 'walk awayer' ... regardless ... call your county Ag/extension office..and share your concern with them ... perhaps offering them a link to a good HVX page ... you last sentence.. it really isnt the consumers duty to address the wholesaler ... wish you had a pic ... full sun has nothing to do with it.. I tried that once before. Given how few complaints they get for HVX (remember, I'm in Texas), they have no clue and as far as I know, do nothing. Maybe I'm just getting old and cranky, but my experience is that complaining to big business or government bureaucrats is a waste of your time and energy. They won't do anything unless they have to. The only way to get a change in a practice is to get the news involved or have it show up on Facebook, instagram or twitter. The authority that should be informed is the New Jersey dept. of agriculture. They are the ones "overseeing" the growers. My nursery is a retail nursery. They grow nothing. They can't control the process, only who they buy from. Also, they have already sold out of the hosta. The question is whether they buy them again next year. I'm just bummed. bk

Josh, I amended the hole with county compost and and topdressed with some more this spring. I have another regal splendor next to this one and that does not have these markings. I will post a pic of that one later.
hey_j, I saw a few threads about hvx but I had a tough time differentiating between healthy and hvx ones.

Well,I am known on this forum for keeping HVX infected hostas,even though I know they have it. They have been in the garden a long time,but have not affected other hosta near them. I never mess with them,but keep them as an oddity, much to the chagrin of the members of this forum.I have told them that I don't care,since HVX doesn't transfer to other hostas,unless you do something to transfer the afliction to another hosta. Also,HVX will not kill the hosta,just make it look funny. Don't do as I do! If you get one with HVX,destroy it,as soon as you can. I'm just telling you my experience. You can do with them,as you wish. Phil

It probably isn't necessarily a soil problem. Have you had a lot of cool and/or wet weather? That can cause chlorosis. I see it frequently in the spring.

ITS ONLY A PROBLEM IF YOU MAKE IT ONE.. AND WE KILL MORE STUFF WITH TO MUCH tlc.. THAN WITH BENIGN NEGLECT .... AND WATER WITH HOSTA..

it look like half of my plants.. as they come up in spring... its growing faster than it can properly color up.. the color will catch up ...

i will bet you a shiny penny .... that within 2 weeks.. it will have proper color ...

please remit penny at close of biz on 14th day ... let me know if i need to send it your way ...

ONE OF THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS WITH THE NEWBIES.. in general .. IS THAT THEY ARE FINALLY PAYING CLOSE.. I MEAN REALLY CLOSE ATTENTION ... and seeing the mysteries of the hosta unfold before their eyes... the only question is whether you will ENJOY the show.. or contemplate chicken little with every new mystery ...

unfortunately.. with all the terror-mongering.... they all want to jump ship and think its all HVX or disease problems ...

ENJOY THE SHOW... RELAX ....

and if isnt performing to expectation.. after giving it a year or two .. then throw it on the driveway ... you know.. they will grow on the driveway...

like the hosta, I will grow out of it too.
btw, my s&s is doing wonderful in a sunny spot and
