Anyone using on-ste card swipers?

I admit it, the idea came from the Suzie's lemonade stand commercial. But I suspect accepting credit/debit cards would lead to increased sales. There is likely a minimum sale point that I would set ($5-6?) in order to use one, but to me if I can sell a lot more, the costs would be another one of those base charges, such as starting media, seeds, trays, equioment!

Our meat people at the market uses one. In earlier years, they used a knuckle-buster, but called in to get the approvals.

Two markets in the urban core of Kansas City, Kansas use debit machines which also take our state's Vision Card (food stamps). There is one machine for all farmers. The marketmaster gives the farmer the debited/food stamp amount in tokens. At the end of the day, the farmer turns in the tokens and a check is written within 3 days. It may seem a bit cumbersome, but it has increased sales at our innercity markets and also opens the markets up to food stamp recipients, ie. women and children, elderly, disabled, etc. Personally, I am glad for the program and the debit machine has been a blessing.

Bobby, I've been there on the stalking guy. Oh I was good enough to date for a very long time, but he never really wanted to marry, as though I was some sort of secret. We did finally get engaged, but I broke it off. Then he'd pop up saying, he was "in the neighborhood" when he worked one county away and lived two away. I finally struck where it hurt the most, I called his dad. His dad didn't like me, but that didn't matter. I told him to keep his son away from me. He stayed away for more than a decade after that. Now he attends my church (I live in Nashville, and attend church in Goodlettsville. With ???? millions of churches here, the chance of him coming to this church???). And he's joined. It's the second most private place one can have. I'm beside myself, but I'm not leaving the church I've attended for years and known the pastor for more than 20 years. My family goes there. What do I do? Who knows. I think death is all that will stop them forever. But that's illegal. I love that you got wind of the new guy's stupidity and got rid of him quick. You've learned. We're lucky when we stop the cycles. You'll get a better one. And enjoy your chicken strips in the meantime! Live your life well, that's the best revenge. :)

hcbm, that's EXACTLY what I've been wondering--and I'm pretty sure I started this thread talking about it: what would happen if our house burned down? What would I miss? What would I not even care about? I need a group of people like you to keep reminding me: if you lost this item, would you really care? In nearly all cases the answer would be No. My husband and I are both very indecisive (you should hear us when he gets a few days off trying to figure out where to go and what to do--until we often give up and stay home), but he at least agrees with me that with most of this stuff in various Rubbermaid containers, we wouldn't even notice if someone else threw it out. But when we start to look, we get immediately bogged down with memories and attachments to each little item. For some good accomplishments since I started--as Kathy Yata mentions above, in the past several months: 1. Got my husband to allow me to unload several bankers boxes of educational materials to a group that really appreciated it. 2. Both of us have reduced our clothes greatly: mine almost by half. 3. I have a bag full of expired medications that I will take next time they have one of those "turn in your old meds" days. 4. Several bags of decorative and household items to Salvation Army. 5. This week many bags of winter clothes, blankets, food to a local charity. 6. Went through all our instruction manuals and was able to dump a lot. Got a entire file drawer down to less than half of a file box. 7. Did the same with greeting cards: putting them in order by category and throwing out dorky ones I've had since the 80s. Threw out a lot I knew I would never give anyone. (But my sister just sent me a really cheesy Christmas one that she got free from a charity--now I wish I had kept one to send back to her. While I'm on a tangent: my other sister sent me the ugliest one for my birthday writing "I didn't pay for this." She wanted me know that she hadn't sent a donation to the charity she got it from. Nice.) 8. Have gone paperless as much as possible this year. Throw out most catalogs without looking. 9. There is a military chaplain stationed in Japan who told me he would love to have a load of religious DVDs and CDs we have. (We used to lead studies but have retired from that.) So that's the next load of stuff to get out of the house. 10. This was in the Spring, but I nearly emptied out our attic except for things like suitcases and the Christmas tree. Maybe just a few boxes of pretty things from my mom and wedding presents that I have trouble parting with but they don't worry me. I hope some day to have a way to display them. Kathy, thanks for suggesting this: I feel pretty good about myself even though I'm still looking at a box or 3 full of miscellaneous stuff. The above proves to me that I CAN do it!

I have my Alexa unplugged until I want to listen to music. I found her to be annoying otherwise. Maybe if she were a he with an Aussie or Kiwi accent I’d change my mind. Friends I visit frequently have their coffeemaker plugged into a smart plug and a Dot in their BR that they use to turn the coffeemaker on. Annoying when I wake up before them. I hesitate to command Alexa in their kitchen to turn on the plug in case she gets confused, as mine seems to.

Yolanda, Things got a little crazy around here in the last ten days or so, so I missed seeing your comment. You broke your hip!?? Oh for goodness sake. I hope all is well now? It's been a while. I too keep breaking things. But I find it helps if I keep more active. More frequent and longer walks, keeping the yard up even if sometimes I wonder why; less giving in to the idea "I'm old, I don't necessarily *have* to do this anymore, I can sit in my chair and read/think/write about African violets," among other things I read/think/write about. It seems to me that mostly I'm only as old as I think I am. (Well, there is that arthritis thing that's been dinging me on a regular basis for a few months, but the healthy way to think about that is, "Just another little PIA.") But I'm also trying not to be stupid and ignore stuff that's happening, just because I've never had any serious issues up till now. Stuff is starting to go to bits, and like a lot of men I know, I've pooh-poohed some issues until they got to the unfixable state, like some broken bones in my hand. And I'm a violinist who until covid was still actively performing semi-professionally, so that's not good. There's a limit to how "tough" a person ought to try to be. I'm not sure I've figured it out yet. Kenora is some cold country, to be sure, and to break your hip in January... was it ice? How is your granddaughter doing, do you get to see her and her family regularly? Maybe not, during covid. I have the huge privilege of looking after my grandson at least a couple of days per week. It's one of the things that keeps me going. Joanne, you're such a generous and encouraging soul. I can't tell you how much you help me feel less stupid. I have at least two more threads in mind. One re the apparently imminent demise of a recent acquisition (I put down a leaf today, probably should've done two, but wth, if I lose it there might be room for something different), and another celebrating the success of Opt Rebecca, which is doing amazingly well, but I wonder if the crown is tight. I talked with a rep from the phone company and the fees seem reasonable, though I still need to find out what the company that processes the transactions will charge, both per transaction and equipment. The phones (Blackberries) are free, unlimited data, 500 minutes/mo. (I use maybe two minutes every six months, Linda maybe 100/mo) for $65.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of info about EBT (Food Stamp payments) on the web - it would great if they could be processed by the same card-reader.

My theory is that the easier I can make it for people to buy, including going to them and taking CCs, will translate into higher sales.

I saw a promo once where you just use your cell phone. You set up an account (I don't remember there being a fee). You dial in to the service when a customer hands you their credit card, the system prompts you to enter in their card info and gives you an approval code. They charged 65 cents per transaction regardless of size. The collected charge was placed in your account. A lot of it was free because they wanted to handle all your business banking (I think). It was a year ago or so when I saw it but it looked do-able and not expensive.

I had checked into it a few years ago, and I found (at that time) it wasn't cost effective unless I was going to have $25,000 sales on credit cards.

The food stamp card can be read on the same machine. I believe you might need to check with the food stamp people.

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, it appears I have to sell at least three varieties of four different food groups each. I won't have any meat/fish or dairy products.

Hi folks,
I'm new to this section of garden web...just joining a local farmer's market starting at the end of June.

Anyhow, I just started using Square to accept cards for my fiber arts business--with that I sell mostly through shops, but for the few craft shows I do a year, thought it would be good. I used it for the first time this weekend and it was amazing. You need an I phone or Android style phone or Ipad. You can take a photo of the item sold, send an email receipt to the customer, etc. You need good cell reception at your market, and a fully charged phone. It was simple to sign up and use. They only require that you make a written receipt out for customers who you do business with this way.

The fees are per transaction (no monthly, no equipment charge) and the card reader is literally an inch square and sticks into the phone jack. I am now waiting for my bank account to be verified, and they say they will deposit once/day.

Amazing! Wish they had this years ago when I did more shows.

2.75% per transaction, but it doesn't seem to support Blackberries, only Apple phones.

InTuit seems to offer a similar plan but with slightly lower rates.

I don't have an IPhone, I thought perhaps someone else will need the info. My sales are not enough to even worry about it. Biggest sale so far -- $22. If I didn't have all these plants, I wouldn't have anything but baby radishes that were planted before I found out that I didn't have a market.
