About the WB and GW site problems

Whenever I see or hear "WB" I think of Buggs Bunny and Porky Pig, such fond memories . . .

But here, WB=Winter Blues Seed Swap. In case you haven't noticed sinces January 2cd, Dave (lazyweeder) posted info on it in our (MN) exchange forum. Remember to post if you want to come in his thread. Julie's thread is about including out of towners and those not able to make it, but still want to participate.

Yes, the GW site is still far from perfect-good-acceptable. But they are still working on it. If you're still finding the need to relog in while still on the site, depending on how you use the back button refreshing(reloading) the page just might work. Also, for those of you who still have no email link on their member page (like me), it can be found in the your journal. This is the latest update from Tamara at GW staffing.

Hey, Rick,
I just read a post by you, somewhere on GW, that you can change that awful green text color on the main screen. Can you send me an email with instructions on how to do that? I also hate the small text size and font that they are using on "my page", too. If you know how to change that, please let me know.

Mike, I think you use . . . Netscape? Probably very similar to Firefox that I use. Go to tools at the top of the page>>options>>general>>fonts & colors. Choose minimum font size, colors, font type(some are easier to read-I like Tahoma). Don't forget to check the "always use my fonts/colors" box if there is one like in Firefox. Click Apply's or OK's back to your browser page.

If you use Internet Explorer, change to Firefox.

A little well placed humor there(IMO), as I really believe FF is a much better, faster and definitely safer browser. But if you use IE, go to tools>>internet options>>general>> colors, fonts. Don't know about font size in IE.

However, with any browser(I think) you can press control and plus or minus to directly increase or decrease sizes while not leaving your viewing screen.

I thought the site was down all day yesterday after I posted because it wouldn't load for me in FireFox. Then last night I finally asked a friend to check and it loaded for him. So then I opened IE and it loaded right up for me in that browser. I had to tell FF to always let GW use cookies. In Tools>Options>Privacy>Exceptions I told it to let www.gardenweb.com and gardenweb.com always use cookies. Then I restarted the browser and it has worked fine since.

Welcome to the 21st Century! Some thoughts on everyone's comments... 1. Real Names? That is just silly...usernames have to be unique...as soon as the 2nd John or Mary tried to use those as usernames there was a problem. And if they did allow it...there would be endless "Which John are you?" or "Which Mary said that?" 2. Creepy factor...yes at first it may be creepy to be able to Google yourself...but just how many people ACTUALLY GOOGLE YOU? Probably just you. 3. Protect yourself in all things techy AND NOT TECHY TOO... identity theft happens more when somebody goes through your trashcan than from the Internet. Or from people clicking on SPAM emails telling them about discount Viagra, their lottery winnings in Liberia, and how much girls in some third world country want to "meet you". FLorida actually has a site that will help you learn more about protecting yourself online: http://www.safeflorida.net/safesurf 4. Photos - be careful. Make sure there are no identifiers about where you live...house numbers, car license plates, etc. And no pics of minor children unless site is secure. And monitor your children too. 5 A. A lot of the forums were brought about from members requests. I agree that the garden forums are done well for the use of so many. It would be difficult to eliminate what we have now, but can see how wading through to find the best option for information would be a bit frustrating with no responses. This is a personal opinion and one of experience, may not be a good example or one others may share. I started here when dedtired did. There were two forums which I loved and spent hours on them, now subtly inactive. They became ruled by a small number and many posters went away. On both the new posters or those who happily joined in, would eventually be targeted as if there was a right to potty mouth them or make them invisible by not responding to their posts. Know of a few who I'm guessing may have had this same experience and migrated to Home Decor/Kitchens. They were part of the other forums I left and now see them here. I became very cautious with the rulers of the other forums to the point of changing my GW name and will never post at them again or use my original name elsewhere. We have had a few of our own situations here where someone tries or does make another take a leave of absence or never be seen again. Here though, when it happens to one of ours, I see a gathering of support for them. It eludes me when someone has to tramp on another. This group has held firm in making all welcome and a respect for so many regardless of how long or new we are. And we have new and old posters who have given wonderful, skilled knowledge and usable advice. Also, if I make a mistake or ramble on, there is no gathering together to kick me. I will be questioned on something, but always with respect and fully understood by me. Well, I didn't answer your exact request. I think the silent, no answer forums have had their due in some way. Not sure if taking them away is the solution or how to resolve the no answer. To all on the Kitchens and Home Decor forums, a thank you for your being kind and caring users. And I would love to see a gathering of "where are they now?". Many are not here that once gave such great advice and spent an enormous amount of time to make these forums what they are. I miss them and hope this group never changes.

Hi Rick,
Thanks for the info. I do use IE because of the ad-filtering software that I use.

I won't be visiting/participating in the GW forums any longer, due to the changes that are going to take place on the 24th of January.

It's been fun, but I'm not going to let GW collect and sell my info to the highest bidder. Everyone will now need to provide their real name so that GW can tie all of the info collected directly to the person.

It's been fun, everyone, and hopefully I will see you on some of the other forums that are available on the Internet.

leftwood, I wouldn't mind getting the info either. Although I am not planning on leaving, just adding on. The filters etc. on my computer have gotten rid of all the pop-ups for me.

Yes, Pauline, I'm not leaving either. Just expanding too, because a very knowledgeable GWer can't get his computer to work acceptably with GW anymore, and I want to stay in horticultural contact. As of present, there is no garden forum site as active as GW.
