Brother Stefan and Blue Shadows

I was considering getting these 2 hostas and was wondering if anyone could tell me something about them. Are they fast growing? Will BS take sun or should I keep them both in shade? My shade garden is mostly bright shade but a part of it gets full sun about 3 hours around noon. Any tips? Thanks. Marg

Both are beautiful plants.
Brother Stefan is a show stopper and grows well.

Blue Shadows is very slow grower, beautiful tones of blue. It is almost the same as Tokudama Aureonebulosa.

Blue Shadows is a beautiful plant and will tolerate full sun...in fact, it will grow much fatser in full sun. However, the coloration in full sun (pretty much all green) is not nearly as nice as in shade. So if you get it, you may want to grow it in full sun for 2 or 3 years until it gets some size and then transplant it to a shady spot. Also, Blue Shadows is a med. size plant, whereas Brother Stefan is a large.

Olga Petryszyn's hostas are among my favorites. This year I bought Brother Stefan, Blue Hawaii, Hoosier Dome, Key West, Manhattan, and Dawn's Early Light. Let's take a look at the tape: I planted both Brother Stefan and Paradigm in 2004. In 2005 Brother Stefan had 3 eyes. It has 4 eyes now. Last year it was 29 by 14. Paradigm had 5 eyes in 2005 and has 17 now. Last year it was 42 by 18. That was my second Paradigm. First is slightly bigger at 44 by 18. After seeing one in full sun last year at a nursery, I bought a third and planted it in full sun. The first two and Brother Stefan are growing in less than ideal spots.

North side with some sun, and it has nice color like that... Hmm, now I'm unsure if shade is the problem with mine. Thanks, Babka, I saved the hosta database page. Funny thing is that when I found it, I thought I remembered getting it because it matched a relative of mine, Stephan. But I just looked at my tag and it is Stefan, so what was I thinking? ......I bet I was justifying buying another hosta and thought Stefan is close enough, lol. The only place I see the "ph" spelling is the top of the page at Hosta Library. Now I see it's for Olga's brother Stefan. It's interesting to find out where some of these names come from.

Sometimes you get a dud. My first Liberty got the best of everything- compost, extra water, all the tree roots removed. It struggled along for four years until I bought a new one and quit babying it. Liberty 2 grew like a charm. Liberty 1 vanished. #1 ws a division from an established plant, #2 was TC. Give the shrimp time. Maybe it will take off next year, or maybe you'll end up replacing it. BTW, Brother Stephen hasn't been a good grower for me. Lionheart wasn't all that expensive when I bought it. For a mostly white hosta, it's grown pretty well.

Thanks for the info guys. I have a large space at the west end of my garden that would be great for Blue Shadows. I have found them up here so now it's off to the nursery I go! Marg

I planted a 2-eyed Brother Stephan last year and this year it has 4 eyes. It gets full sun for 1 hour around noon and it's in fairly moist soil. I like it!
