show up with 25 odd hosta you claim you owe him ... plus a few others from a third party ...

go figure...

thanks dave and todd ... spent all day yesterday trying to get them all planted ....

too bad todd couldnt jump in the car and come along .. maybe someday ...

yeah .. yeah.. i know you want a list.. i dont have it on the computer yet ...

all i know is.. i finally got moon river back in the garden...

so he pulls up.. and the entire back of the minivan is filled with pots.. and i am eye-ing certain of them ... figuring.. as usual ... that mine are all the plain ole carp .. and the really cool ones will be pulled out.. discussed and put back in ... pure torture.. thats how it usually goes... lol .. BUT NO >> I GOT THEM ALL ..... who-ray ....

dave.. you have to come some time.. and skip the other party .... bring todd and the body guard ... and give me the body guards email in a private post ....

and.. it never fails to amaze me.. the hybridizers.. who can predict heritage... who g-ma and g-pa were.. based on flower color or shape... what was it dave.. anything with dark purple and bell shaped... is ventricosa based... so the leaves are usually about the size of your hand.. and usually sparkly .... i mean ... i really enjoy it.. when i get a hardcore.. that can teach me things i dont know ... or forgot .. truly an inspired visit.. though.. as usual .. too short ..

PS: be sure.. i dug him up a treasure or two ... and some plain old stuff for him.. so he will show up again with a another trunk full .. lol ...

I forgot to bring my camera on this trip! Yes there was some trading going on! Ken I don't think you will ever run out of stuff I don't have.
Ventricosa was the one we talked about. You see the influence in Bridegroom, Stirfry, Lakeside Black Satin, Holly's Dazzler (and other Holly's plants).
I don't remember the name of the plant you were showing me.
I was really impressed to see Warwick Essence and smell the fragrant flowers. I wouldn't have predicted that. It seems I can tell by something in the leaves when a plant has Plantaginea in the background, like that streaked gold one you need to divide.

Exactly as the link shows, I just did two more yesterday and although its hitting in the upper 80s lately, i don't have a choice as my boys are smashing them near the basketball court. It's either move them or sacrifice them to the "ball god" as i have nicknamed it. As with any plant, the hole and quality of soil and amendments makes the difference between success and struggling plants. Thankfully the hostas can take it.

My SdlMs all got a bad Mildew attack after the hot wind as well. Some of the roses I bought that were 3 years old and grown from "virus free" bands showed RMV on leaves that formed during that horrible heat. I felt so let down. I would have kept my old plants instead but I wanted virus free copies. I wish they would send the roses out to hot areas to check them before claiming they are RMV free. Now the new leaves and flowers are free of the mildew but the old leaves show the scars of the mildew attack they went through. I am finally getting some pretty SdlM flowers again. The DA row that got hit by the neighbors roundup spray is slowly coming back. For a time I considered removing them all, I was so discouraged. It was hard to see spring come and watch them cling to life instead of grow and bloom as they usually do. The garden has always been both a comfort and a great challenge. But when I have had hardship and sadness, I always found myself there. I'm thinking of you and sending love for your brother. I hope the changes you made in the garden will give you a beautiful late spring-early summer and beauty in the years to come.

you asked me.. pappy gave you the answer ... the potato like crown needs to be at soil level ... the little pips within one inch of the top of the soil ... if planted too deep ... as little as 2 inches ... the plant will waste too much energy trying to get above the soil.. many will fail if too deep... crown .. pip.. eye.. petiole... cordate ... lanceolate.. all terms of art ... may as well start learning them .. you have bought your first hosta.. addiction is not far behind ... so you may as well start learning the terms.. lol ... find the hosta library ... there used to be drawings and stuff to start you on your way toward knowledge ... BTW .. while you are there research HVX virus.. especially the pix of such .... there are some mass marketers that sell virused plants.. especially if the packaging refers to bulbs.. i would perhaps not trust them ... if your plants show any sign of such .... destroy them.. NO MATTER HOW COOL THEM LOOK .... if you do catch the hosta fever.. we can recommend many great mail order sellers ... good luck .. come back often ... ken PS: blue angel can get up to 4 feet high.. and 6 feet across ... but it will take 5 to 7 years .... plant it where you can leave it for that long ...

first.. remove dead leaves ... if they were in the ground.. i would suggest that is where early slugs are hiding ... second ... you should be able to tell from the weight of the bag... how much water is in there ... if you had a grow bag of dry media ... im just making up numbers.. maybe it would weigh one pound ... if you can barely lift a bag .. and it feels like ten pounds.. well ... you have 9 pounds of water in there... just a little more than a gallon.. if that old 7 pound thing is correct ... what you should do over the summer.. is water a bag ... mark the date.. and not water it again.. until you see the plant wilting a bit ... then see how many days to took to dry ... and then water accordingly ... i think you ought to cut way back.. until you figure out some facts to work with ... until the high heat of summer hits.. i cant really think they need water every day .. especially when they havent spread out their water losing leaves to the atmosphere ... and keep track of spring rain amounts... to use in your equation ... my bottom line.. as usual ... try not to kill them with too much love.. and watering every day in march.. might just be that ... ken

Interestingly enough, Art Wrede was telling me just last week that anything with a ruffled edge (Candy Dish, etc) all have ventricosa in the deep dark parantage too. I'm glad someone is getting you some new plants Ken, if you wait for me to dig, etc you will be old and grey! LOLOL!

Then again... you never know what the future (or the mail box) might hold!

Ah Ok I see Color Parade at the Library, sport of Fragrant Bouquet. So the solid yellow plant taking the clump over is probably Fried Bananas.
