yellowing tomato plants

My tomato plants are turing a light green almost yellowing what

are you all watering your starts with after 5 to 6 weeks

in the small pots I think they are needing a boost to get thru a couple more weeks. Jay your plants look wonderful

from your market garden posted pictures,

i think they need a nutrient boost. are they planted in potting soil?

I haven't had that problem. I transplant mine into 4" and larger pots and start watering with fertilizer water. All of my fertilizer water is 1/2 strength or weaker. I water them whenever they look wilty. I would rather water more often with weaker fertilizer than to fertilize 1x-2x per season. Mine keep very dark green leaves.

Um. Yeah. Me too. Those are peppers I grew with Holy Comforter but sell at work. They were from a purchased package of "yellow pear tomato" seeds from Baker Creek! I've never seen anything like them before, but I ate one and they are delicious. When mine fruits more I'll take a photo of it and ask on a tomato forum. Maybe we can get an ID! GGG

there is a very hardcore tomato forum ... if it were in my yard.. i would note they are the oldest leaves.. the ones on the bottom ....and clip them off.. and walk away ... i would suspect.. while walking away .. that it has something to do with soil splashing on the plants... has it been very rainy lately??? i know the first maters of the year are coming.. and you want them.. and you worry .. but trust me.. in a month.. you will be beating this thing back with a stick cursing the day you planted more than one plant... leaving bags full in parked cars and running away giggling.. lol ... i just dont think with tomatoes one need 'worry' too much ... and if i wanted sprayed ones ... i would buy them at the store .... as i said.. i am sure those in the tomato forum.. would consider that blasphemy.. lol .. as will some here ... ken

Is the yellowing from the bottom of the plant going up? Is the whole leaf yellowing evenly or are small yellow spots growing larger? Do the spots you talk about have a yellow halo around them? Are you using mulch? Due to the excessive rain and damp conditions, it could be any number of things. If you donÂt have mulch or something to prevent the dirt from splashing on the lower leaves during the rain it could be something like early blight. Just a guess. There are plenty of people on here who can could diagnose better.

When the soil becomes waterlogged from too much rain, irrigation, etc., the roots can't take up any oxygen, or nutrients and so tomato plants will turn yellow and wilt. If there's any standing water try to dig wee ditches to get the water out of there. The normal sequence is foliage turning yellow and wilting and the foliage turning brown and when it's all brown the plant usually doesn't make it. So do hope that conditions change and the soil has a chance to dry out. Adding fertilizer isn't going to help b'c the roots can't take it up and applying it to the foliage directly isn't going to help either b'c the main problem is lack of oxygen uptake through the roots. Carolyn, who has been through this many times when she was growing several hundreds of plants in a field and there were a few low spots that would fill up with standing water that she tried so hard to drain. Another observation is that some varieties do better and last longer under such conditions than others. So fingers crossed.

Yes a mix of 3 parts compost 3part peat 1 part vermiculite
half cup lime to mellow the peat and 2 cups base mix of
blood meal, bonemeal, greensand.
I think they have exhausted the nutrients as it has been
so windy I have had to water much more then normal and have
depleted the mix. I will try a foilar feed of liquid fish and kelp to see if this helps.

Foliar feed helps a bit, but not much in my opinion. I would use a higher concentration of fish/kelp and water the plants well with it. Do it once a week until you get them in the ground. Don't worry about over-feeding, they are tomatoes!
Also, make sure you're not watering bone dry soil or you'll lose all the liquid to the floor.
