silver maple from seeds?

I am outside Reno NV. I am trying to educate myself on what is in my new yard (just moved here, yard has been established 20 years, but they went a little overboard).

One tree is definitely a very healthy silver maple. It is a good choice here for the shade and because we do not see many windy storms that cause breakage.

How would I go about planting a second tree? Can I grow a seed? If so, how? When will my parent tree seed, and what should I do with the seed to grow a second tree?

I am not sure if I want more maples, I just want to know all about them. I have horse pens that could REALLY use some shade and I am considering a few different types of trees. Here I have poplars (fast growing, but ugly) quaking aspens (pretty, but problem some), pines (evergreen, but a lot of clean up and not great for shade over horses), russian olives (again, not a beautiful tree in terms of shape and growth, but fast growing). There are others I have not yet identified - about 4 types. But I am getting there! :)

Blooms early and develops the fruits early. Pick and sow when fully formed but before they become hard and brown. Try searching "maple propagation" etc. on the web. You will have to handle them in such a way that dormancies are overcome before germination will take place. Seeds of cold climate plants have this feature so they don't pop up at the wrong time and die during the winter.

I would suggest something other than silver maple. They are shallow rooted and tend to start breaking up at a younger age than other maples. They do grow faster, which may be a short-run benefit.

I would look around for something else of higher quality.

This was a great/terrible year for SM seeds. I collected five, 5-gallon buckets with very few sprouts. In a few days they were steaming hot so I mixed them equal amount of last years leaves. I was surprised at how long they stayed hot. There is not a need to sprout them. John Here is a link that might be useful: Johns Journal

Seeing the same thing with our silver maple in our front yard. Nursery guy said it was stressed (tough summer and winter). We've got galls already too (ugh!). Nursery guy said all we could do to help was to water it. I've been a little stingy with the irrigation this year so it looks like it'll be getting a good soaking over the next weeks. Roselee, I went out today and checked both of my female Chinese pistache trees, and there is not a seed to be found on either of them. Wonder if the birds have already eaten them or if they need to be harvested before they freeze? I have never had one germinate anywhere around these two (they are in different locations) so don't know if the seed are even viable. Anyone out there with more knowledge about them, please chime in.
