How many seeds do I plant in a seed starter kit cell?
Comments (14)Safyre--sometimes it is better to start a new thread rather than adding onto an old one. As for your question, it really would help to know what plants you're talking about. (As to the OP where how many seeds really depend on the plant). Are you talking transplanting into pots indoors, or into a garden. Since Houzz got rid of zone info, where are you at? I'm in Denver, so starting seeds now would mean I can't transplant out until April/May at the general earliest (my veg garden is just in plans right now for seed starting soon). But I have lots of pots indoors for the winter. All are different--I have some newly sprouted chives that I seeded directly into their pots. But I won't start my basil for another month or so, because it shouldn't go out until end of May due to our night temps here....See MoreHow/when do I harvest the seeds?
Comments (14)Thanks, Penny. Is it too late to collect the seed heads from Jacob Cline Mondarda? That did well for me, as well as the Cleome you sent me. The Cleome was just spectacular!! I'm sorry to tell you the Lobelia Cardinalis did not do well. It was just too hot and dry, even though I watered it almost every day. Then some kind of bug chewed it up. The only other things that have bloomed well for me are the pentas, Salvia B & B, and the Agastache Apricot Sprite. The Apricot Sprite seed packets were everywhere this spring. Do you think they are as easy to find in other parts of the country? I could try and collect seeds for exchange if you think others couldn't find them in the stores. Salvia B & B doesn't come back true from seeds, so it doesn't seem right to collect these seeds for trade. What about pentas? How do you collect those seeds? I have been cutting off the spent flower heads all summer long to keep it blooming. Thanks!!...See MoreHarvesting Hosta Seeds (Nature's Work, Not Mine)
Comments (2)near 100% germination.. on viable seed... some make pods with no seed.. many of us.. grow them in winter.. under fluorescent lights ... if you do not have a streaked mother plant... you will get a vast majority of green plants .. like 90% ... though if you take seed from yellow or blue.. you might get that color up to 30% .... these are all rough numbers ... you will not get an edged or centered hosta... unless you are the luckiest person alive .... i would say 99.99999999999999999% against .... harvest the whole stalk.. when the first one opens... that is the bottom one ... there is a brilliant tutorial on the home page of the hosta library.. by none other than library bob himself ... ken...See MoreNew at this....How do I harvest parsley seeds
Comments (4)I am fairly sure that the curly dwarf and the taller flat-leafed parsleys don't cross-pollinate, but, if I ma wrong, can someone please correct me? I collect the seed of both and haven't noticed issues so far, but they may be flowering at diff. times and I do separate tehm just in case. I don't always pay close attention to details, though....See Moretrudy_gw
